Lot 2145
1801 NC-3 R6+ Error Fraction 1/000. About Good-3. Sharpness VF20 but there is a large, deep corrosion spot on the obverse that obliterates about 20-25% of that side. The remainder of the planchet is covered with light roughness and shows a few marks as well, but these flaws pale by comparison to the obverse crater. The deeply corroded patch on the obverse contains a reddish substance that must have been the copper planchet before it was transformed by some chemical process into its present form. The rest of the coin is a rather glossy mix of chocolate and olive brown. Too bad about the crater because this piece has more detail than the Sheldon plate coin for this very rare variety.

Some of these splashes contain extremely fine granularity, the roughness so minor it is hardly visible with a strong glass but it does affect the gloss. A thin nick or short scratch down the upright of the first T in STATES is the only notable sign of contact. MDS, Breen state III. The cud break under the date is strong.

The tops of BERT are softly struck as is the opposing area at the denominator but everything else is nicely impressed. Some shallow dirt or waxy crud shows around the 2 in the date and under the bust tip at right. MDS, Breen state III. Called VF30 and tied for CC#11 in the Bland/Breen condition census. Comes with an impressive provenance as well.
