Lot 2083
1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA. Fair-2. Sharpness VG8 or so but moderately corroded. No marks or verdigris, but the roughness weakens some of the details. The date is weak but remains readable, the chain is clear, and the legends are nearly complete. Dark steel, nearly black.

Lot 2084
1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent with Vine & Bars Edge. PCGS graded AU-50. Glossy medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The obverse is smooth and nearly flawless, the only marks being a dull, light rim nick just right of the date and a tiny planchet chip in the field off the chin. The reverse is void of contact marks but shows several shallow, narrow planchet voids or striations. The largest of these planchet flaws is just above the loop of the wreath ribbon and along the left end of that ribbon to the U in UNITED. There are traces of dark planchet impurities in some of these voids attesting to the relatively crude technology used to prepare our copper planchets during this first year of our mint's operation. Nonetheless, this cent remains quite attractive and the flaws are certainly mint made. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen die state II. The "Sprung Die" feature shows clearly as a nearly horizontal wave in the field behind the head, but the wave is not yet strong. EAC grade net VF35. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

1794 S-54 R3. VG-10. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better but covered with fine corrosion under a slightly glossy patina of dark olive brown with lighter chocolate brown highpoints. The two-tone patina helps accent the details and adds to the eye appeal. No distracting verdigris and the only mark of any consequence is a thin vertical hairline scratch on the cap below the L in LIBERTY. The date and legends are easily readable except for weakness at OF-AM. Early die state, the obverse die still uncracked.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.

Lot 2086
1794 S-57 with date expertly reengraved as 1793. Good-4. The obverse is a bit better than the reverse, the G4 grade a compromise between the two sides. Rather glossy medium brown and chocolate. There is extremely fine roughness covering the fields and a dull scratch through the lower half of the wreath, but the eye appeal is decent for the grade. The date was very carefully reengraved to read "1793" and the work is suggestive of the "Smith Counterfeits" that are so popular among a segment of the large cent collecting fraternity.
Estimated Value $75 - 100.

Lot 2087
1794 S-64 R5-No Fraction Bar. Fine-12. Sharpness near EF40 but covered with fine roughness that's hidden somewhat under a rather glossy patina of dark chocolate brown and olive. There are traces of waxy verdigris in some of the protected areas, but the major defect for this cent is a strong scrape or dent on the rim under the date, and this dent was strong enough to cause a slight rise on the rim at S-O on the reverse. No other significant marks. The date and legends are strong except for the denominator, which was delicately cut into the die but still shows. The missing fraction bar feature is visible. MDS, Breen state III.

1794 S-67 R3. About Good-3. Sharpness better on the obverse where the date is clear and LIBERTY is complete, but the reverse is weaker. Nonetheless, the reverse legends can be made out with some effort. Glossy dark olive brown with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. There is extremely fine roughness under the patina but no verdigris. The only marks are a couple small punches on the cap and a dull rim nick at the M in AMERICA.

1795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge. Clipped Planchet. VG-10. A glass reveals myriad fine hairline scratches on the portrait and traces of shallow verdigris in protected areas. Rather glossy medium brown with darker olive toning in protected areas. Electrotype Copy of 1795 S-80 Jefferson Head Obverse. VF-35. An unusual piece composed of an excellent electrotype copper shell of the Jefferson Head obverse imbedded in a lead square, and the corners of the lead square have tiny holes for mounting. The electrotype shell was made from the VF35 ANS example. It is a very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown free of any notable defects. The copper is intact with none of the underlying base metal showing through. The "reverse" is not represented, replaced by the lead square. An odd and curious piece to be sure, perhaps one with an interesting history.

1796 S-103 R4+ Draped Bust with LIHERTY Obverse. VF-25. Sharpness AU50 or so but covered with fine to moderate roughness that's mostly hidden under a glossy dark olive and steel brown patina. No verdigris and the only contact marks are a small pinprick in the field near the dentils off the chin and a thin vertical nick high on the shoulder. EDS, Breen state I. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the bottom while the reverse is properly centered on the planchet. The date and legends are complete and strong, and the LIHERTY (actually B over inverted B) feature is bold. An important example of this rarer version of the famous LIHERTY error. Called AU50 net VF25 and CC#8 in the Bland/Breen condition census. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 6,500.

1799 S-189 R2. SEGS graded About Good-3 Obverse, Fair-2 Reverse. The obverse is sharper than the reverse and grades a solid AG3 while the reverse is barely Fair-2 and an argument could be made for a Basal State-1 grade for that side. The surfaces are reasonably smooth but do show microscopic porosity under magnification. Lightly cleaned leaving the highpoints several shades lighter than the dark steel brown toning that covers the remainder of the planchet.
