Lot 2264
1864, $10 Confederate States. B-A Plate Letter Error. PCGS Very Fine 20. . Fr-CS-68. Listed as PF-4 by Fricke, this example is one of less than ten or so discovered survivors of this rare error. It his a highly sought after error by specialists, and this new discovery is likely to inspire spirited bidding. A single short edge tear is the only mentionable flaw on this example.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Lot 2265
1864, $20 Confederate States. Butterfly Error plus Bookends. PCGS Choice New 63. . Fr-CS-67. Imagine our surprise when, as we diligently searched note by note through this historic hoard, we discovered this beauty of an error. Thinking there was simply a corner fold in the upper left corner that was bent over, we reached behind…and pulled up this marvelous Butterfly! Errors of this type on Confederates are scarce but did happen from time to time, but the size and eye-catching appearance of this one makes it one of the most dramatic we have ever seen. The two bookends grade Choice New 63 and 63PPQ respectively, while the error note grades Choice New 63. Grade is almost irrelevant, however, as this note could not likely be replaced in any grade.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Lot 2266
1864, $10 Confederate States. "F" Plate Letter at Right Corrected from "A". PCGS Fine 15. . Fr-CS-68. Listed as PF-43 in Pierre Fricke's excellent tome on Confederate Currency, this is a rare error of which only one reported example has surfaced prior to this note. It is an intriguing error, with the possibility of spirited bidding by specialists ever a possibility. Hard to estimate, but likely to easily reach or exceed our "guess."
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.

Lot 2273
1864, $20 Confederate States. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. . Fr-CS-67. This beautiful Gem example from the Roswell Bank Hoard has full margins and excellent color. True Gem Confederates are not easy to locate, as typical examples--even from the overprinted issues of 1864 that created hyperinflation before Lee's surrender at Appomatox rendered them contemprarily worthless--were often cut haphazardly and usually display some degree of centering problems or even margins that are cut well into the design. This is as nice an example as we've seen, and it will be interesting to see how much value the market will place on a very scarce high grade example of an otherwise common Confederate note. Our estimate here might prove quite conservative, perhaps even in the extreme.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

$1,000 in Confederate Currency. . Fr-T-72. This intriguing group of 43 series 1864 notes consists of 31 T-68 $10s, two T-67 $20s, seven T-66 $50s, and three T-65 $100s. The grades range from damaged VG to VF, but more importantly is the method of their storage--they are banded together with an apparently contemporary paper band that is pinned to the back few notes with a stick pen and is labeled "1000", the face value of this group. A piece of white twine also holds the group together. Probably counted and wrapped by a bank during the Civil War or shortly thereafter, a wonderful group of historical importance from this time of national crisis. Lot of 43 notes.
