Lot 2015
1899, $2 Silver Certificate. CGA Gem Uncirculated 66. . Fr-258. . KL-139. This $2 Silver has terrific originality and embossing that can be seen through the holder, and its even margins support the grade. This design type has seen increasing demand over the past several years, and we fully expect this demand to continue to increase as more collectors are enticed to join our hobby every day.

1886, $5 Silver Certificate. CGA graded Choice Uncirculated 64. . Fr-261. . KL-231. The "Silver Dollar Back" design type is always popular among collectors, particularly with currency collectors who also collect coins because of the crossover appeal. This example has bold colors and bright paper, although it is held back in grade by a barely noticeable corner tip fold outside the design at the lower left.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.

Lot 2018
1886, $5 Silver Certificate. CGA Choice Uncirculated 64. . Fr-265. . KL-235. The Silver Dollar Back design is one of the most popular type notes in all U.S. currency collecting, because of its back design which features five 1886 Morgan Silver Dollars. The crossover appeal to coin collectors has long been sufficient to make it a more expensive note than its scarcer 1891 counterpart, but high grade examples have always been scarce enough to make the appearance of one at auction an opportunity for spirited bidding. This example is pleasing for the grade, and is pedigreed to the Plymouth Rock Collection.

Far away the rarest Friedberg number of the type, and likely the Finest Known of the 22 extant. A number of the known examples are in permanent institutions.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

Lot 2019
1896, $5 Silver Certificate. CGA Gem Uncirculated 66. . Fr-268. . KL-238. This beautiful Educational Five has outstanding centering and boardwalk margins, and the colors and inks are rich and bold. This Gem last appeared in a 1999 CAA auction, and it is listed in the Gengerke census as "CU." High grade type notes are in strong demand in today's market, and this ever-popular design is no exception. The beautiful engraving on the face, an allegorical representation of electricity as the dominant force in the world, is considered by many to be the penultimate in U.S. currency design.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 22,000.

Lot 2020
1896, $5 Silver Certificate. PMG graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. . Fr-268. . KL-238. A lovely Gem example of this ever-popular design, with extraordinarily broad margins and excellent colors. PMG has assigned this note their "Exceptional Paper Quality" modifier, indicating that their opinion is that the paper surfaces are completely original. This short-lived design type is among the most treasured type notes in all of currency collecting, as the allegorical figures presenting Electricity as a dominant force in the world give as artistic a display as has ever been conceived for a circulating medium of exchange. Because of the partially-clad female figures on the face design, this note did not meet with contemporary public approval in that more purient Victorian era (especially evident in Boston, where the Comstock ring held power--leading to the phrase "banned in Boston"). The design was discontinued after only three years of production, and surviving examples in top grade are highly valued today by collectors.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 24,000.

Lot 2021
1896, $5Educational Silver Certificate. CGA Gem Uncirculated 66. . Fr-268. . KL-238. Broadly margined and boldly printed, this beautiful Educational $5 has all the eye appeal necessary for the "66" grade. There are some incidental hints of handling, but the paper is bright and the colors and inks are bold. The current market values eye appeal, and this note certainly has it--the gorgeous engraving design combines with the merits of the note and create a visual masterpiece.
Estimated Value $18,000 - 22,000.

1896, $5 Silver Certificate. PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ. . Fr-269. . KL-239. The $5 Educational Series Silver Certificate has long been considered the penultimate in U.S. currency design, and original, unmolested examples are always in high demand. This gorgeous near-Gem boasts bold originality and excellent embossing, and would be fully Gem but for the margins which are a little tight at the upper right on the face. With the current currency market in the midst its biggest "boom"since the early 1980s, and with high quality graded material especially in demand, expect our estimate to perhaps be conservative in the extreme.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.

Lot 2023
1896, $5 Silver Certificate. PCGS Very Fine 20. . Fr-269. . KL-239. A mid-grade example of the ever-popular $5 Educational series design type. A group of bankers in Boston were convinced by their wives that the semi-nude females depicted on this note were obscene. They refused to circulate these notes, hence leading to the term "Banned in Boston."
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

1899, $5 Silver Certificate. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ. . Fr-271. . KL-241. True high grade Indian Chiefs are not especially rare, but original examples with bold embossing and near-perfect centering are highly valued in today's market. This specimen is as bright as can be, with vivid colors and terrific originality. If the centering were just a shade better, a Superb Gem grade would have been in order.

1899, $5 Silver Certificate. PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ. . Fr-273. . KL-243. This beautiful Indian Chief has a single light fold that prevents a higher grade. It is fully original and boldly embossed, and appears to be fully Choice New or finer at a glance. A lovely example that is likely to command a premium for the grade due to its outstanding eye appeal.

1899, $5 Silver Certificate. PCGS Apparent Fine, Washed, Back Discolored, Overprint Redrawn. . Fr-273. . KL-243. PCGS notates a healthy list of problems on this Indian Chief, as some neat restoration work has gone into making it look appealing again. The blue Treasury seal has been repainted, and the back has discolored due to the note having been laundered.
Estimated Value $300 - 350.

1899, $5 Silver Certificate. CGA Gem Uncirculated 67. . Fr-280. . KL-250. This lovely Indian Chief is fully margined, well centered, and appears to have fully earned its high assigned grade. The colors are bold and bright, and the overall appearace is nothing less than one would expect for the grade. The embossing is light and difficult to discern, but the note will appeal to any discriminating buyer based on eye appeal alone.

1923, $5 Silver Certificate. CGA Gem Uncirculated 67. . Fr-282. . KL-252. This "Porthole" note (so-called because of the visual affect of the circular border around Lincoln's portrait, which makes it appear that he is gazing out a ship's porthole) is broadly margined and well centered. High grade and attractive, and likely to receive several strong bids.

1923, $5 Silver Certificate. RCGS About CU 58. . Fr-282. . KL-252. A couple of light folds are all that prevent this nice Porthole from a Choice CU grade. The bottom margin is a trifle thin at the left end.

Lot 2033
1880, $10 Silver Certificate. CGA Very Good 8. . Fr-287. . KL-412. This is a rather scarce number, with less than 70 examples known in all grades, and survivors are apt to be well worn like this piece. There are some extensive restorations visible from the back, but the note faces up nicely and does not look unappealing for the grade.

1886, $10 Silver Certificate. RCGS Extremely Fine 40. . Fr-294. . KL-419. There are several folds evident on this Hancock Deuce, but the overall appearance is above average for the grade. The colors are bold and bright, and the paper appears to be without any flaws.

1891, $10 Silver Certificate. PCGS Choice About New 55. . Fr-299. . KL-424. Although little originality remains, this beautiful example has bold colors and the eye appeal of a much higher grade. A single fold prevents it from being called anything better than About New. Tombstones are difficult to locate any finer, and this attractive example would not look out of place in an Uncirculated type set.

1891, $10 Silver Certificate. CGA Gem Uncirculated 65. . Fr-301. . KL-426. This Tombstone has good color and margins for the grade. It is a lovely Gem, with great centering and ideal eye appeal. This design type gets its rather obvious nickname from the design border around Vice President Hendrix's portrait, a particularly interesting choice since he died in office the year before this design type was introduced.

1880, $20 Silver Certificate. CGA Extremely Fine 45. . Fr-311. . KL-581. This is the most common signature combination of the design type with more than 100 examples known, but nice circulated examples are always difficult to locate. This one is attractive and problem-free with bold inks and bright paper, and the folds that are present are not obtrusive and are completely in line with the assigned grade. Always a popular type, and certain to inspire spirited bidding before the hammer falls.

Lot 2040
1880, $20 Silver Certificate. PCGS Very Fine 35. . Fr-311. . KL-581. This attractive "Black Back" Twenty appears in the census and has been sold previously at auction graded XF, but the experts at PCGS chose the more conservative highest Very Fine grade. It has several folds, but the rich colors and inks contrast sharply with the bright paper giving it the appearance of a higher grade. This design type is quite rare in higher grades.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

1891, $20 Silver Certificate. PCGS Choice About New 55. . Fr-322. . KL-592. A couple of hard corner folds are the only flaws on this attractive $20 Manning. Lot 2042
1891, $50 Silver Certificate. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30, Rust Spots Painted Over at LL. . Fr-334. . KL-720. Although there is some minor restoration work on this $50 Silver, performed to cover up some rust stains on the face side, the overall appearance is not at all unappealing. High denomination large size notes are not common much finer. Pictured at the right side of the face is Edward Everett, who is perhaps best known for delivering a 2-hour oration shortly before Lincoln delivered his brief, 2-minute long Gettysburg Address.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
