Demand Notes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1910
1861, $5 Demand Note. Fr.2 RCGS Very Fine 25. . Fr-2. . KL-185. This is a solid example of the first United States Federal currency issue, with bold colors and much crispness remaining. There are a number of closed pinholes present, otherwise the appearance is acceptable for the assigned grade. Demand notes are always in demand (no pun intended), and we expect this example to find an appreciative new home.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Lot 1911
1861, $5 Demand Note. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20, Multiple Restored Holes, Repaired Tear at Top Left. . Fr-2. . KL-185. Although, as mentioned on the PCGS label, there are numerous closed pin holes and a single short tear at the upper left that has been expertly repaired, the overall appearance of this early greenback is quite sharp. The hand-signed signatures are bold, and the paper is quite solid for the grade. Demand Notes are very scarce without problems of some nature, and this example, even though "red holdered" by PCGS due to the repairs present, represents an affordable opportunity to the average collector to obtain a nice-looking example.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Lot 1912
1861, $10 Demand Note.Fr. 6 RCGS Very Fine 20. . Fr-6. . KL-352. This New York Demand Note has above average eye appeal, and although it displays signs of moderate circulation it appears solid and problem-free. Most Demand Notes are plagued with problems, and this is a pleasant exception. It is this cataloger's opinion that this is a much-ignored early series, and nice, original notes from this era are undervalued as a whole when compared to later, more expensive (and more readily available) large size type notes.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 10,000.
