  1844 Repunched 18. . N-3 R2. MS-60. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with nearly 10% of the faded mint color remaining, mostly on the obverse. The reverse is choice while the left obverse field is covered with tiny lint marks from debris on the die. The only other marks are a speck of darker toning right of the date and a tiny nick in the field under the outer edge of the hairbun. Terminal die state, die state e, with a strong rim cud break from star 9 down nearly to star 11, plus other smaller rim cud breaks at stars 8-9. Tied for CC#10 of the die variety.

  1845 Coronet Head Cent. . N-9 R2. MS-60 Plus. Frosty light olive and steel brown. The surfaces are satiny and quite attractive for the grade, especially the obverse. The best identifying marks are a tiny speck of darker toning inside the C in CENT and another at the base of the E in STATES, neither at all distracting. Sharply struck M-LDS, die state b late. All the obverse stars show full radial lines and the portrait details are fully impressed. Tied for CC#6.

1847 Repunched Date. . N-1 R2. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Very lustrous bluish steel brown with hints of faded mint color remaining in a few protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal is excellent. The only marks are trivial and include a small spot of very fine carbon in the dentils left of star 2, a faint vertical hairline scratch just left of star 12, and a tiny planchet void on the neck at the middle curl (as struck). Nicely struck LDS, die state c. Repunching is still visible at the lower left of all 4 digits of the date. EAC grade MS63 and tied for CC#2.

1847 Coronet Head Cent. . N-21 R1. AU-50. Lustrous medium brown with a hint of reddish steel overtone. Very little if any actual wear, but a large low spot (caused by debris on the die) covers the cheek and neck down to just above the date. No spots or stains. LDS, die state b (Newcomb's old #40).

1847 Coronet Head Cent. . N-23 R5. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel brown. No notable defects, only a few microscopic planchet flakes and handling marks, none visible without the aid of a strong glass. The best identifying mark is a tiny, barely visible planchet flake midway between stars 12 & 13, as struck. M-LDS, die state d. The reverse die cracks are strong and the area between die cracks in the dentils at AM is shifted inward. EAC grade MS60, tied for CC#3.

1848 Coronet Head Cent. . N-13 R4. MS-63. Choice lustrous light bluish steel brown with 15% of the mint color remaining. The surfaces are satiny and show only a few microscopic marks, including a barely visible spot of darker toning between star 13 and the dentils and a faint horizontal tick just right of the lower lip. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. Slightly the finest of only 4 known in mint state.

There is a small nick on the jaw over the throat, a speck of carbon on the throat, some tiny lint marks in the field over star 1 from fine debris on the die, and a small stain of reddish brown toning at the dentils over star 10. The reverse is choice and has slightly reflective fields. EDS, die state a. Tied for CC#6 overall but finest known of the early die state.

  1848 Coronet Head Cent. . N-31 R2. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. The obverse is highly lustrous light bluish steel brown with faint hints of underlying faded mint red showing through. The reverse is frosty bluish steel with at least 10% of the faded mint color remaining. The only marks are a tiny scuff that barely breaks the frost midway between star 1 and the throat, another on the cheek over the throat, a small nick on the throat, and a spot of darker toning in the left upright of the N in CENT. Excellent eye appeal, especially on the obverse. EAC grade MS62+, close to MS63. MDS, die state c, with 2 dentils fused over the R in AMERICA. Tied for CC#5. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1849 Coronet Head Cent. . N-5 R3. NGC graded MS-63 Brown. Glossy dark chocolate and steel with medium brown toning in protected areas. The only marks are some microscopic planchet chips scattered about the obverse, mostly in the field off the chin (all as struck). Sharply struck very early die state, die state a. The obverse fields are prooflike and fine die polishing lines cover the field behind the portrait. The earliest state seen for this variety. The edges of the planchet are beveled, as usual for several die states of this variety. Called a proof in the Sloss sale held by Abe Kosoff in 1959, but it is a business strike using a new, polished obverse die. Great eye appeal regardless. EAC grade MS60. Tied for CC#3 overall but finest of the early die state by a wide margin.

The obverse is nearly choice and offers excellent eye appeal. The reverse, however, suffers from an obvious planchet lamination through ER in AMERICA extending onto the rim above that R. There are a few minor spots as well, but they are of little significance. The lamination is a mint-made flaw, but it still counts. MDS, die state b. Repunching is still visible at the bases of the 1 & 8. EAC grade MS60, tied for CC#9.

No spots or stains, only microscopic marks, including a tiny planchet flake at the base of the second 1 and a small rim nick left of star 2. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with die polishing lines covering the obverse fields. The repunching at the date (from the date being lightly punched upside down, then corrected) is clear.   Pair of Large Cents Counterstamped by Dr. G. G. Wilkins, Brunk W-610. The first is an 1835 head of 1836 grading VG but holed at star 12. The second is 1851 grading VF30. Both are glossy brown and chocolate and the stamp is carefully positioned in the field close before the face. Dr. George G. Wilkins, a relatively prolific stamper of coins, was a dentist in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, in the 1850's to 1870's. Lot of 2 coins.

1834 William H. Seward Hard Times Token Low-14A, Rulau HT-27A Rarity-5 MS60. Frosty light silvery gray with satiny mint luster covering both sides, especially on the obverse. No spots and the only mark is a tiny rim nick on the reverse at the O in OUR. Nicely struck except in the centers, which show minor softness as usual. The planchet was silvered prior to striking, and the silvering is intact over the entire surface. Excellent eye appeal.
