This coin is similar to the Venetian ducats. The difference is that on the Venetian coins, the Doge is kneeling before St. Mark. Here, a senator is kneeling before St. Peter.

The portrayal of St. Peter in a ship would later become a very standard design. Here is one of the first (and surely one of the finest), examples of this type.

Leo had been groomed for the papacy since a young child. He was intelligent, articulate, and industrious. Yet his time as pope was a disaster. He was unfortunate to have to deal with Martin Luther and the Protestant schism. His position as a Medici prince embroiled him in the Italian wars of the time and seriously damaged the church's finances.

Innocent, differing from many of his predecessors, was a true servant of the church. He fought to abandon the policy of nepotism, whereby previous popes had appointed their relatives to important church posts. In addition he humbly fought for the values and ideals of the early church fathers.

A most unusual pope. Elected at age 78, and almost blind, he was mostly confined to bed where he transacted all matters of state. His background as a lawyer served him well, and he fought successfully to restore the papal treasury. He re- instituted the public lottery, which brought millions into the papal coffers.

This is a Sede Vacante issue. Translated, this means vacant seat. Such coins were issued upon the death of one pope and before the next was elected. Various archbishoprics issued Sede Vacante coins as well.

The conflict betwwen honesty and devoutness versus political acumen was apparent during the time of Clement. Honest to a fault, he too easily believed in the goodness of others, especially his relatives. He appointed many who were less than competent. Also extremely modest, he had fig leaves placed on many of the Roman statues in the Vatican's possession.
