Achaia. Zecchino, ND. Fr-38a. 3.56 grams. 22.92 mm. Duke of Achaia, 1346-1364. A crude imitation of the Venetian coinage of Andrea Dandolo. Obv. Doge kneeling before St. Mark. Reverse: Christ standing within stars. NGC graded MS-63.

Achaia is actually in modern Greece, near Epirus, but was ceded to Charles II of Sicily in 1267. The coins are of an Italian ruler and of an Italian style (Venetian Ducat), yet could easily be labeled as Greek.

Ercole, listed as Hercules in the coin's legend, was one of the most important dukes of the Este family in Ferrara. He is known as a great patron of the arts, but was far less successful as a military leader, losing badly to Venice. He did increase the size of Ferrara and extended the walls of the city. A very important renaissance gold coin and exceedingly rare.

Genoa, like Venice was ruled by Doges, or dukes. They were elected, originally for life, then for just two years. Simone Boccanegra was the first elected doge, and the first to produce gold coins. This is an amazingly choice example of the coinage.

This ducat is one of the great rarities of this collection. The doges were theoretically chosen from the general populace, but were effectively chosen from a few wealthy families. In fact, two families, the Adornos, and Fregosos dominated the elections.

Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, occupied Genoa at the end of his long and tumultuous reign. His rule was shortlived, so his coins are very scarce.

Starting in 1528,Andrea Doria enacted the reform allowing the doges to rule for only two years. From then on, the rulership in Genoa was known as the biennial doges. The coins are mostly distinguished by the magistrate's initials.

The history of Sicily at this time is one of constant foreign rule. The Sicilian natives in 1282 rose up against the Angevin rulers and briefly attained their independence. The Pope rejected their independence, so the citizens, desperate for some help, called upon Peter of Aragon to help. He arrived in five days, consolidated his power, and subjugated the ciizens for his own ends.

The Aragonese dynasty produced very few coins. All are great rarities. It seemed the rulers were more concerned about their Spanish holdings, and less interested in Sicily.

This coin was issued by Ferdinand the Catholic, who ruled Sicily as Ferdinand II, but was known as Ferdinand V of Castille and Leon. The legend describes him as king of Castille as well as Sicily. An incredibly well preserved example.

Galeazzo was one of the more important renaissance figures of Italy. He is known both for his support of the arts and his cruelty. He is infamous for devising cruel and unusual tortures for his enemies. Not surprisingly, he was assassinated. He did produce some amazing renaissance gold coins.

Charles, or Carlo I of Anjou, after being thrown out of Sicily, went to Naples and ruled there. He was allied with papal interests helping to keep the imperial forces out of Italy. Despite the setback in Sicily, his dynasty was very powerful in Naples. His gold coins are extremely rare.

Ferdinand ruled Naples for 46 years. Following him would be tumult for ten years until Ferdinand the Catholic returned the Aragonese to the city.

Alfonso inherited the Neapolitan crown upon the death of his father. His kingdom was plagued by financial instability. With the imminent invasion of the French king, Charles VIII, supported by the Sforzas in Milan, the Spanish were doomed in Naples. Alfonso abdicated after a two year reign. His gold coins are great rarities.

The French rule of Naples lasted just a few years. Ferdinand and Isabella, in alliance with Emperor Maximilian I, retook Naples. He appears here with Isabella. She died later in the same year, so almost no coins of Naples with both their portraits were struck. A great rarity.

Charles V was possibly the most powerful ruler in the history of Europe. He controlled Spain, Naples and Sicily, and the Holy Roman Empire. He proved not equal to the complicated machinations of the politics of the time,and later abdicated.

Savoy was a small duchy constantly being fought over by more powerful neighbors. Its location in northwestern Italy placed it in a contending position between France, Spain and the Empire. Little commerce could transpire during all the conflicts, so few coins were produced.

Leg: CA ROLUS*II*D*G*HISP*ET SIC* REX. Reverse: Bust of king right within an ornate cartouche surmounted by a large crown in which are palm branches. And at the sides of ornamented cartouche a ribbon with the legend: REVI VISCIT, ANNO and date below. Rare. NGC graded MS-62.

Charles II ruled for 35 years, beginning as a minor under the regency of his mother. He actually improved the Spanish position in European politics. Trade increased, money once more returned to the Spanish treasury, and even his old enemy, Louis XIV of France, became somewhat conciliatory.

Siena was an important Tuscan city and rival of Florence. It maintained its independent republican status from 1167 to 1555. During that period it was an important wool and banking center. For a short period, the city was conquered by the Milanese adventurer Giovanni Galeazzo, who issued a small number of gold coins. All are rare.
