NGC graded MS-63.

The archbishopric of Salzburg was one of the leading bishoprics in late medieval times. In fact, during the 16th and 17th centuries, Salzburg was the Catholic bastion of anti-Reformation sentiment. Saint Rudobertus (Rupert), being the patron saint is almost always pictured or mentioned.

A very choice example with a bold strike and original fresh mint luster. NGC graded MS-62.

These early Salzburg Ducats are very scarce in such choice grades as is offered here. Not all of the Archbishops were cardinals of the church, but Matthau was, and the cardinal hat indicates that.

The title of the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolph II, appears on the reverse here, but not on the earlier Salzburg Ducats. This is an indication of the growing power of the Empire, requiring such states as Salzburg to acknowledge its fealty.

In the legend, the title of the Emperor replaces the mentioning of the patron saint (St Rupert). Therefore, the letters "S R" are added to maintain the relationship with St. Rupert.

Clearly, coins of the latter part of the 17th century show improved minting techniques over their 16th century counterparts. This example, produced in 1678, is of a more modern appearance.

This coin is a departure from the earlier types in that a secular figure (Archduke Sigismund), replaces a religious figure (St John), on the coins. Perhaps an indication of the trend towards secularization in Europe at the time.

Breslau, in Silesia, was sort of a backwater of the Empire. Very few gold coins were minted there. Hence, the great rarity.

Archduke Karl was the younger brother of of Emperor Maximilian. He was given the Duchy of Styria to rule. All his coins were minted at Graz or Klagenfurt. It is most unusual to find one of these scarce ducats this choice.

Rudolph, son of the previous Emperor Maximilian II, ruled for 36 years. This relatively long reign allowed Rudolph to consolidate his diverse holdings. Interestingly enough, Rudolph was having a bit of difficulty in Hungary, and the mentioning of St. Ladislaus on the coin indicates his attempt to smooth over his rule there.

This Ducat is most unusual with the presence of the two obverse shields. The Bohemian and Hungarian shields are indicative of just how important these territories were.

Ferdinand ruled at one of the most difficult times in the Empire's history. His election in 1619 was immediately followed by the defection of Bohemia and the beginning of the 30 Years War. Even though Bohemia was soon defeated, the war would devastate central Europe for the next century. Attempting to streamline his Empire, Ferdinand established primogeniture in his territories.

A very seldom seen type, especially this choice. Ferdinand is pictured as a young man, yet the Thirty Years War would age him considerably. He was able to see his Empire at peace for a few years before his death.

Leg: FERDIN.III.DG.RO.IMPERA.S.A. Reverse: Crowned double eagle, on breast, crowned Bohemian shield, mintmaster mark below. Leg: GER.HUN.BOH. - EMIAE.REX.1648. Razor sharp and fully lustrous. Very Rare. NGC graded MS-64.

This is an amazing coin in terms of its quality. The details are of a sharpness not to be normally found. "Ger" signifying Germany is added to the legend indicating that the Peace of Westphalia established Germany as sovereign states answerable to the Emperor.

This coin was struck right before Ferdinand's death. He appears as a much older man. A far less seen variety than the younger portrait. An amazingly sharp example for the type.

Liege was a powerful bishopric in the 17th century, with far greater holdings than the present city in Belgium. In fact, Liege controlled much of western Belgium and parts of France. The silver coins of the bishopric of Maximilian Henry are quite common, but the gold coins are almost never offered. The legend on the reverse tablet found on the reverse indicates the Dutch influence.

Bohemia at this time was an independent kingdom. The reverse Bohemian lion indicates that. So even though the Emperor is pictured, he was Karl I of Bohemia and Karl IV of the Empire. This is a very scarce and popular type, almost never seen this choice.

This is a distinct variety of the previous lot. Donnebauer indicates the variety, but Friedberg does not. The greatest difference is that here Karl is 3/4 facing and previously he was full facing.

One of the rarer Goldguldens of this entire collection. Exceptional quality as well. Vladislav was the eldest son of of king Casimir of Poland. He was the ruler of Bohemia and Hungary. Due to the Polish connection, this coin is sought after by both collectors of Bohemian and Polish coins.

Wallenstein is one of the most fascinating characters of this period. Born of a noble family, he was appointed general of the Imperialist forces by emperor Ferdinand II. A great general, he won numerous battles for his commander. Unfortunately, his ego was as great as his abilities, and he so angered his officer corps, that they assasinated him.
