Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson. 1st American Edition. 11" x 9" x 3½" thick, with original lmarble boards, leather corners, and leather gold-stamped title spines and tight binding. Light overall age toning and occasional foxing, but bright and fresh with very clear text. This volume covers the letters "STR-ZYM" and has 58 copper-plate illustrations. Topics include: an extensive description of Surgery, with six full-page engravings; a section on Naval Tactics with seven plates showing warship battle positions; a section on Telegraph and Telescope, with a full-page engraving of Herschel's Grand Telescope; and a large section on WAR with 21 full-page plates. From the first set of Encyclopedias published in the United States.

17th Century Tamil Hindu Prayer Book. Written on 10½" x 1" palm leaves with a stylus, giving the order of worship at a local shrine in Madura, India in the 1600s. "Tamil" is the oldest known language that, to this day, remains written and understood. The text is tiny, yet sharp and clear; the palm leaves are held together by two small wood planks that were "holed" and remained in place with a pair of simple wooden pins. One pin is missing and is temporarily held together with a length of think rope. Accompaned by a century-old tag with a penned notation, "Old Hindu book on palm leaf…Madura, India…J.T. Tracy." Of special interest to the linguist or antiquarian book enthusiast.

1803 3 Vol. Supplement For 1st American Encyclopedia. A complete set to the first American Encyclopedia, which was published in Philadelphia in 1798. This supplement set, published by the same Encyclopedia authors, was printed by Budd and Bartram for Thomas Dobson, Philadelphia, 1803. The three volumes run from A-Z and are complete, oversize editions, each. 11" x 9" x 2½" thick. Original marble boards with leather corners and gold-stamped title spines. Light page toning but overall a very clean and bright set. Select topics are illustrated with full-page copper-plate engravings, and topics include architecture, astronomy, carpentry, chemistry, the galvanic theory of electricity, magnetism, and mineralogy, as well as a history of Germantown in Philadelphia, a description of and plate illustrating the Guillotine, a section detainling the French Revolution, and a lengthy history of the United States States. A rare adjunct to America's first published Encyclopedia.

Original leather boards with new spines; gold, red-letter titles, and gold-gilt remarques. Small paper repair of Vol I's title page and light toning throughout. Comprised of thousands of articles, letters, and petitions, much of the work taken from original records and authentic testimonial accounts, covering the period from 1650, when the Quakers were first called by that name (during the English Civil War), to 1689, the first year of the reign of William and Mary.

Bowditch, Nathaniel. The New American Practical Navigator. New York: E.M. Blunt, 1817. Thick 9" x 5½" leather cound edition, consisting of 274 pages of text, 280 pages of nautical tables, and a very large appendix showing the parallaxes of the moon and sun, and related longitude calculations. Book is replete with numerous illustrations and calculations, including a fold-out chart/map of the Atlantic Ocean. Scattered foxing throughout, toned pages, and some damp-staining throughout. Rebuilt spine with gold-stamped title and remarques decorations, stamped "New York 1817." An excellent reference for those interested in early American nautical writing.

McKenney, Thomas L. Sketches of a Tour to the Lakes, of the Character and Customs of the Chippeway Indians, and of Incidents Connected with the Treaty. (Baltimore: Fielding Lucas, 1827), 494 pages, 9" x 6", rebound in brown closth with gold-stamped leather title plates, 5 full-page engravings. An early narrative written in diary form which gives an intimate look at the Great Lakes and native peoples of the region. A full-color lithograph of a Navaho Indian was used as a frontispiece when the book was rebound. Pages have uniform age toning; original title page is missing but narrative is complete. Overall a sound copy of the rare original, in very good condition.

Original boards with rebuilt spine showing gold remarques. Gold-stamped title is mistakenly labeled "The Testimony of George Fox Concerning Isaac Penington…London 1679" but this refers only to the first testimony in the book. Rare, early and important Quaker work.
