Lewis relative to land at Kulanakauhale, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. Good; tape repairs at edges of folds; one fold split, and overall toning. Signed by C.N. Spencer as Minister of the Interior, with the Royal Seal. Page 2 has a small map of the land involved.Spencer was appointed as Minister of the Interior in June 1890 by King Kaladaua and reappointed to the same position by Queen Liliuokulani in February 1891.

Fine; a few scattered brown spots.With royal, green embossed marshall's seal and blind embossed duty stamps. The document concerns the suit of A.J. Cartwright (sometimes called the father of modern baseball and an important monarchy era business figure) versus a native Hawaiian by the name of Pekero.

(Hawaii) Assignment of Real Estate Leases. Land transaction between Robert Halstead, Henry Gordon, Gaspar Sylva and Joseph Mendonca 3½ pp, 12½" x 8", 27 Aug. 1878. Fine; light toning and seal offset. Witnessed by Levi Chamberlain, who was a member of the Second Company of American missionaries that arrived in Honolulu in 1823, and signed by Robert Halstead, a pioneer sugar planter who became the owner and manager of Waialua plantation, which was succeeded by the Waialua Agricultural Company in 1898. Also signed by Henry Gordon, W.R. Castle (as Notary Public), S.N. Emerson (as Agent to take Acknowledgments for the Island of Oahu), and Thomas Brown (as Registrar of Conveyances). Document has royal seal (ink).

Paris, Jr. relative to land at Kaawaloa, South Kona, Island of Hawaii, 3pp, 12½" x 8", 24 Aug. 1881. Very fine. John and Mary Paris signed with green seals. Also signed by Thomas Brown as Registrar of Conveyances and J.W. Smith, as Agent to take Acknowledgment. John D. Paris, Jr. was elected to the Territorial Legislature in 1887; he was a member of the Reform Party. He took charge of his father's land and cattle in 1874 and in 1880 purchased his ranch in Kealakekua.

(Hawaii) Kamehameha III (1814-54) He became king (1824-54) after his brother, King Liholiho, died from measles while visiting London. His mother, Queen Kaahumanu, served as regent until her death in 1832. Under her influence, he became a Christian and banned many Hawaiian traditions and practices. He reigned longer than any other Hawaiian king.

Royal Patent No. 1327 Signed as King with the royal seal, 4 pp, 14" x 8½", Honolulu, 21 Mar. 1852. In Hawaiian and English. Very good; overall toning; offset from seal. A transaction with Samuel N. Emerson relative to land at Mokuleia, Waialua, Oahu, Hawaii. In an 1856 addendum, Emerson relinquishes his right to this land to his father, in return for a different piece of land.

(Hawaii) King David Kalakaua (1836-91) Last King of Hawaii (1871-91), called "The Merry Monarch"; he was forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution of 1887, which severely restricted his powers and the rights of native Hawaiians. Royal Patent No. 6594 Signed "Kalakaua R" as King, with embossed Royal Seal, 2 pp plus integral docket leaf, in Hawaiian, 15¾" x 10", Honolulu, 6 July 1874. Very good; overall toning; the King's signature is exceptionally large and bold. A transaction with Moelalau relative to 4.36 acres of land at Honomalino, Kona, Hawaii. Countersigned by W.L. Green as Minister of the Interior; he also served as Premier, Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs under Kalakaua.

(Hawaii) Montagu, John - 4th Earl of Sandwich. Oversize folding document on four sheets of vellum, Signed "Sandwich" twice, once alonside his personal seal in red wax, and once on the verso of the 4th vellum sheet, 23" x 29½", Somerset, 23 Mar. 1743. Fine; folded; minor age yellowing and light exterior soiling; a couple of small holes in the vellum. Concerning the sale of property at Enmore in Somerset by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich to Robert Long. First page (in back) has scalloped to edge and British coat of arms. Each page bears three British revenue stamps.

John Montagu (1718-92), fourth Earl of Sandwich, was first Lord of the Admiralty during the American Revolution. He assisted Captain Cook in fitting out his fleet in 1778, and the Sandwich Islands (later called Hawaii) were named after him. He was Secretary of State for the Northern Department before being appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Montagu succeeded his grandfather to the title in 1729 at the age of eleven.

(Hawaii) Nuuanu Land Survey By Sereno E. Bishop, With Map. Rare signature of S.E. Bishop on a survey of "a piece of land in… Pualoalo, Honolulu, Island of Oahu, to be leased by Mrs. T.H. Hobron to a Chinaman," 2 pp, 12½" x 8", Honolulu, 9 Nov. 1889. Fine. Page 2 has a hand-drawn map with outline color. Includes references to adjoining lots of Abraham Bolster, T.H. Hobron, W.O. Smith, and P.C. Jones. Bishop worked as a surveyor for many years, mapping the complex water rights and land titles in Nuuanu Valley. He was a prolific and controversial commentator on political, religious, and social conditions in Hawaii and was recognized as an expert on natural phenomena.

(Republic of Hawaii) Sanford Dole As President. Honolulu Land Patent No. 3726 Grant Signed by Sanford B. Dole as President of the Republic of Hawaii and by J.A. King as Minister of the Interior, 3 pp, 16" x 10½", 20 Nov. 1894. With the seal of the Relpublic of Hawaii and a map of the land grant. Very good; a few scattered holes to paper and overall toning. A transaction with Mrs. Elise S.V. Neumann relative to land in Manoa Valley, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii.

Sanford Dole (1884-1926) held positions in all three branches of the Hawaiian government under the Monarchy, Provisional Government, Republic and Territory, including being President of the Republic and first Governor of the Territory of Hawaii. He is especially known for securing the constitution of 1887 and the overthrow of Queen Lilliuokalani of the Hawaiian Islands. James A. King was a pioneer inter-island shipping magnate who was appointed by Dole as Minister of the Interior in the Provisional Government and in the Republic of Hawaii. He was father of Governor Samuel Wilder King and grandfather of Federal Judge Samuel P. King.

Robertson of Honolulu, which was foreclosed for nonpayment, 1 p., 13" x 8", 5 Oct. 1898. Very good; toning.With tipped in foreclosure notices in Hawaiian and English. Signed by Thomas G. Thrum as Registrar of Conveyances; he issued the first Hawaiian Almanac and Annual and was a leading writer on Hawaiian archaeology and folklore. Also signed by W.S. Edingsa s Notary Public, with blind stamp. Edings served as Circuit Judge of the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Circuit courts and was appointed Associate Justice, Supreme Court, Territory of Hawaii, in Sept. 1918.

(Hawaii) Thurston, A.G. Autograph Letter Signed "A.G. Thurston" as Clerk, Land Office, one page, 10" x 8", Land Office, 1 July 1851. Fine; scattered, uneven toning. To O.R. Wood, Honolulu, stating: "The Minister of the Interior is authorized to grant you a fee simple title to the lot lmentioned in your application upon your paying…the sum of Thirty Dollars." A.G. Thurson was the son of missionaries Asa and Lucy Thurston and the father of Lorrin Thurston, who drafted the infamous Bayonet Constitution. A.G. was elected to the Hawaiian Legislature (1853), and became Speaker of the House in 1854.

With pictorial banner and text: "The Pacific Ocean.will become the chief theatre of events, in The World's Great Hereafter." Contents include letters from missionaries in Hawaii and Asia, a Marine Journal listing arrivals and departures of ships, and ads with drawings of the Hawaiian Hotel and The Sailor's Home.
