1847 Coronet Head Cent. . N-18, R5. EF-40 Repunched Date, the so-called 7 over Medium 7. Five points sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned frosty bluish steel brown and chocolate. No spots or stains and only a few microscopic marks. The protected areas are covered with satiny mint luster. Rare late die state, state d, with strong rim cud breaks from below the 1 in the date to star 2 and another from star 4 nearly to star 5. Third finest of only 13 known with these cud breaks, and several of those have weak cuds.

1847 Coronet Head Cent. . N-21, R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Frosty bluish steel brown with 10% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the only marks are a tiny horizontal nick at the dentils under the 8 in the date and a very light nick on the throat along the jawline, plus traces of an old fingerprint in the field left of star 12. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a. EAC grade MS60+.

All 3 cuds are visible on this example, but they are not strong. Tied for CC#4 of only 7 known in the terminal state.

1847 Coronet Head Cent. . N-28, R4+. VF-20 Repunched 4. Sharper by at least 5 points but there is some extremely fine roughness under the rather glossy dark olive and chocolate brown patina. A small spot of shallow corrosion on the rim over star 6 is the only notable mark. Extremely rare late die state, state e, with a clear rim cud break at ATE in STATES. One of only 5 known in this die state, and the best is only VF25. The repunching on the 4 in the date is still visible.

  Trio of Late Die States. Includes 1848 N-6 in state e with a raised retained cud break at MERI grading VF25, 1849 N-11 in state c with a strong rim cud from U to the end of the wreath ribbon grading VF20, and another 1849 N-11 in the terminal state, die state g, with rim cud breaks from under the loop of the wreath ribbon to the U in UNITED grading VF25. All are slightly sharper with minor defects, but the cud breaks are strong. Lot of 3 coins.

1848 Coronet Head Cent. . N-9, R1. VF-30. Slightly sharper with a few light nicks on the cheek and another hidden in the hair under star 7. Attractive glossy light to medium brown. Rare LDS, die state f, with a series of rim cud breaks over D-STATE. The right end of the cud over the E is weak but the margins are still visible and the other parts of the cud are clear. Tied for CC#5 of 18 known in this die state.

1848 Coronet Head Cent. . N-19, R6-. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown. Proof-Only Variety. Dark bluish steel brown and chocolate with undertones of iridescent rose from very faded mint color on the obverse. The surfaces are covered with a thin layer of natural oxidation that limits the reflectivity of the fields, but there are no spots, stains, or obvious hairlines. The only marks are a couple vertical planchet creases on the obverse. These show from the hair over BE in LIBERTY down to the ear with another short one on the chin. They are planchet marks that didn't completely strike out and should not be mistaken for post-striking scratches. EAC grade Proof-60. Pop 1; the only brown proof graded at NGC.

1848 Coronet Head Cent. . N-40, R3+. EF-45 Repunched 18. Sharpness AU55 but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy medium brown delicately mixed with slightly lighter and darker brown tones. The only marks are a small group of tiny digs on the rim below the second 8 in the date. Extremely rare terminal die state, die state c, with a small but strong rim cud break under the 48. This cud reaches the dentil roots under the 4 and is especially strong on this example. Only 5 examples are known with a clear cud break, and this one is CC#3.

1849 Coronet Head Cent. . N-21, R4+. Fine-12 Incomplete Planchet. Slightly sharper where properly struck, but there is a small patch of reddish verdigris at star 8 and a bit more on the edge at star 9. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with a couple splashes of reddish chocolate on both sides. Struck from an incomplete planchet cut from the end of the strip. The left half of the planchet is too thin and ends in a long, straight clip. The dentils opposite this clip are weakly strruck, the so-called Blakesley effect that testifies to the genuineness of the mint error. The planchet weighs 123.6 grains versus the 168 grain standard.

1853 Coronet Head Cent. . N-17, R2. VF-30 Counterstamped DR. G. G. WILKINS. Brunk W-610. Glossy medium brown. Slightly sharper but there are a few fine pinscratches on the reverse. Otherwise attractive and free of defects. Strongly counterstamped before the portrait by the good dentist from Pittsfield, New Hampshire, who was a prolific stamper of coins, mostly large cents, in the mid-1800's. Dave Bowers, an enthusiast of stamped cents among many other things, was reported to have more than 200 examples of Dr. Wilkins' handiwork.

The only marks are a pair of tiny planchet chips at the top of star 2, as struck, and a bit of darker toning at the dentils over the second T in STATES. The surfaces are satiny and quite attractive. Late die state, die state c. The obverse die is misaligned to K-9 but the reverse is properly centered. Tied for CC#3 of the variety. The mint error only makes it better.

Otherwise the surfaces and eye appeal of this piece are outstanding for the grade. Choice glossy medium brown. MDS, die state b. Broadstruck with very wide rims around both sides. A very nice example of this rare type of large cent error.
