Lot 3919
1856-O $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. Normal amount of light bag marks for the grade. Pop 9; 20 finer. Only 1 mint state 60 graded at PCGS. A few small marks at the chin and jaw, another mark, equally trivial, in the field by the 5th star. Notable in this grade, the surfaces show enduring golden bloom and there are no planchet defects or toned spots on either side. Sheer boldness of strike in all instances would be the ideal for a scarce high quality 1856-O ten-dollar gold piece like this, but the coin failed to strike adequately and was left by the rebound of the dies in a somewhat soft state at the stars. The core devices, by contrast, and this is key, are very well struck, they are akin to the quality of a P-mint eagle. (PCGS # 8620) .
Estimated Value $2,900 - 3,000.

Lot 3920
1860-S $10 Liberty. AU-58. Well struck and quite lustrous with semi reflective surfaces on both sides. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago, now a mellow golden-orange. One miniscule tick on the reverse rim near 12 o'clock. No known mint state examples. A lustrous orange-gold specimen. A fantastic coin in this high grade. The mintage of the 1860-S was just 21,200 pieces. These were all too successfully used in circulation, with the result that today the typical example is apt to be worn, abraded Very Fine. Walter Breen noted that the 1860-S is "Extremely rare EF, unobtainable above," perhaps echoing David Akers' comment, "A very rare coin in any condition and, to the best of my knowledge, unknown in full Mint State." This beauty ranks high within the condition census for finest known.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,500.

1871-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. Only 8,085 minted. Well struck with light even gold toning. Usual amount of light marks for the grade. Pop 4; 1 in 58; 1 in 62. Elusive and quite costly as a high-end specimen in About Uncirculated, this fresh looking example is free of annoying rim bumps and has only a few small tics on the face and in the outlying areas. The strike, while complete on the stars and legends, is also well above par at the centers for the issue and both sides reveal copious amounts of luster (PCGS # 8661) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Lot 3922
1872-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Lightly toned on loth sides. The presently offered coin is a handsome About Uncirculated 55, as noted, in warm brownish gold, with excellent luster and a mostly sharp strike. This is an impressive, beautiful coin to say the least, and its new owner can feel rightly proud to display it.

The mintage of the 1872-CC $10 was just 4,600 pieces, since most depositors preferred the more functional $20 denomination for export purposes. Of that figure, various estimates have been given for the number of survivors, but it is believed only 40 to 60 exist, with the typically encountered specimen apt to grade an abraded Very Fine or so. The early coins of the Carson City Mint, especially those of 1870 through 1872 in all denominations and the smaller denominations for a time after that, circulated heavily. Pop 4; none finer at NGC. Very rare with no mint state examples graded at either service.
Estimated Value $22,000 - 25,000.

Lot 3923
1873-S $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Slightly pinkish around the devices. Pop 5; none better. Available only as a Closed 3 variety, although Open 3 and Closed 3 varieties exist for many other denominations and mints of this important year in American numismatics. Exactly 12,000 pieces were struck of the 1873-S. The majority were put into commerce where they circulated widely. NGC has yet to certify an example as Mint State, putting this lovely AU58 at the head of the Condition Census in a tie was only a few others. A remarkably smooth, clean (not "cleaned") example, the present piece has noticeable bright remaining luster, a splendid strike, and beautiful original color.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

1875-CC $10 Liberty. NGC graded AU-50. Light orange and gold toning. A splendid "CC" mint $10 gold coin. Only 7,715 coins struck. There is a small hairline on the neck, but the facial features are decidedly superior to most of this rare issue in that they are free from heavy abrasions. Very scarce in this high grade. Pop 7; 10 finer.
Estimated Value $16,000 - 18,000.

Lot 3925
1876-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Mostly untoned. Low mintage of 4,696. The surfaces are slightly reflective. Pop 3; 2 in 55; 3 in 58. A lustrous example, filled to the rims with gold color and plenty of luster that rises and falls in an almost rhythmic display. Struck with not quite the preciseness of the P-mint product this year, there is the normal softness found at the centers, particularly on the hair below the coronet. Contrasting this, however, is a sharply made reverse whose motto and ribbon is finely detailed, along with full feathers and nearly full claws on the eagle. A coin whose original surfaces separate it from the throng of lesser contenders for your collecting dollars (PCGS # 8675) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 21,000.

1897 $10 Liberty. NGC graded MS-66. Frosty and well struck. Pop 5; 1 in 67. A boldly struck gold-surfaced coin whose high-end depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh mint bloom. Where an ineffectual imprint is sometimes left after the dies retract in the press, those that struck this year's coinage the opposite is in fact the case here: devices are crystal clear show delightful detail in the centers. Bidders be warned, you may face stiff competition.

1899 $10 Liberty. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck and untoned. Some minor spots on the reverse. Bright rolling-fresh finish, frosty as when first issued, awash in originality. Difficult to find this choice. Adding to those results, a word about strike: this piece has all but needle-sharp devices, with gorgeous detail on the stars, Liberty, and eagle. Would be a gem were it not for some dark spots on the upper reverse. Pop 849.

1901-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Intensely lustrous. This conditionally desirable contribution to the sale is brilliant with rich frosty surfaces, the luster swirling around both sides in typical (and very beautiful) cartwheel radiance. The strike is free of censure, being sharp in all areas without exception. A blunt impression never found on this year's coinage, yet the present coin exceeds even the normal razor-sharpness one sees! Ideal type coin (PCGS # 8749) .

1901-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. This conditionally inexpensive contribution to the sale is brilliant with rich frosty orange gold surfaces. Impressive too is the strike, which we find is free of censure, being sharp in all areas. There is, however, a streak of toning on the reverse that may impede a higher grade (PCGS # 8749) .

1906 $10 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Only 77 proofs struck. Intensely reflective fields with a pristine orange-peel effect on this handsome Gem 1906. Crisp, radial luster like that found on all the best specimens. On the reverse, a small depression in the horizontal stripes of the shield is the only mark worth pointing out but this may be an artifact of the striking process, that is, an aspect of the die and not post-minting. The 1906 Proof eagle is one of the scarcer Proof issues from the early 20th Century. Perhaps only 30 exist in all grades and in gem, which is the beautiful condition offered here, it is often many years that pass between the appearance of any example. While many of the Proof gold issues from the early 20th Century come with uniformly brilliant surfaces, this specimen displays lovely cameo contrast between the deeply reflective fields and frosted devices of Liberty and the eagle. Pop 3; 5 in 66 Cameo; 1 in 67 Cameo.
Estimated Value $24,000 - 27,000.
