Lot 3312
Russia. Novodel Pattern 5 Rubles, 1755-SPB. Fr-114; Bitkin-H401; Sev-185. Elizabeth. Weight 8.4 grams. bust of the Tsarina wearing a small crown; mintmark below. Reverse: Large St. Andrew Cross over crowned double headed eagle. Quite sharply struck with brilliant prooflike surfaces. Very slight die rust is noted on both sides. The first letter of the mintmark has been recut several times. This interesting coin is part of an experimental series of four 5 ruble patterns having slightly different design details and struck in two diameters. The smaller version at 23 mm utilized obverse 2 ducat dies without the obverse mintmark. The larger type in 25 mm size uses this obverse with the mintmark below the bust. Both size types exist with somewhat different reverses. One variation has a large Saint Andrew cross on the eagle without the shield, as this specimen, while the other uses a small Andrew cross on a shield which is superimposed on the eagle. They are cataloged as Severin 183 to 186 and Bitkin H398 to H401, all R3. Extremely Rare, R3 with 4 to 9 pieces estimated to exist. If indeed that many are extant, we doubt that any will be much finer than this lovely specimen. PCGS graded MS-65.
Estimated Value $75,000 - 100,000.

Russia. Ruble, 1712. Bitkin-537; Sev-290; Diakov-239,4; Uzd-0530; Dav-1650. Peter I. Type with G under the bust, for the French engraver Solomon Gouin. this pleasant specimen, fully equal to the Diakov plate coin, is well struck and attractively toned with traces of mint luster. The silver fineness of the 1712 rubles, along with those of 1714, was reduced and the coins were for that reason unpopular with the public. Few were saved and they are accordingly now very rare.
