Light to medium gray toning, some golden highlights, on a full flan with sharply detailed legends (although the tun mintmark is flat on both sides), almost complete outer beaded circles, the only detriments being a few faint ancient scratches in the obverse field. Choice Extremely Fine.

Great Britain. Half crown, 1658. S.3227A. Oliver Cromwell. Draped bust of the Lord Protector facing left. Reverse: Crowned shield and the legend PAX QUAERITUR BELLO (Peace is Sought by War!) Exquisitely toned in shades of deep grey and blue, this spectacular coin, graded MS64, is the Terner specimen. We have only seen one Cromwell halfcrown which is ever so marginally better and that (MS65) example fetched $15,525 (lot 1926, Ira and Larry Goldberg sale June 2004). All Cromwell Halfcrons are now regarded as specimens or limited issue patterns but hardly any have survived in this lofty state of preservation. PCGS graded MS-64.

Bust of James II, laureate bust left in Roman dress, resting on four sceptres, terminating in the badges of the kingdoms, upon a pedestal, in from of which is affixed the royal shield within the Garter, crowned. Neptune in his car, and ships in the distance. Reverse: Justice standing in center, at her feet lie the bodies of Monmouth and Argyle; their heads are on blocks inscribed. This medal commemorates the ill-advised, ill-executed, and unsuccessful invasions of Monmouth and Argyle, both of whom were defeated, captured, and beheaded in 1685. Beautiful old tone. Rare. "In the reign of Charles II, Captain William Phipps, under the auspices of the King, attempted to recover the treasure which had, forty-four years before, been lost with a Spanish ship in the West Indies, off Hispaniola. His efforts were unsuccessful, and James II refused to assist in his renewed attempts, but Christopher, Duke of Albemarle, and some friends advanced the necessary funds. When these were almost exhausted he became successful, and returned to England with silver to the amount of £300,000."

Rare type, in fact one of the rarer crowns of England from the last 400 years. Subtle luster beneath quite attractive dark golden bluish gray toning. Nice strike, no defects except for a large black haymark (metal flaw, oxidized tin in the native Welsh silver) in the the middle of the king's throat, good rims without marks, free from the usual myriad of scratches and abrasions seen on these early, large silver coins. NGC graded AU-50.
