Lot 1977
Group of 19 Finely Drawn Engravings from a French Book of Merit. Showing the Techniques & Tools of Coining. Perhaps from Denis Diderot's famous and influential "Encyclopedie ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des metiers, par une societé des hommes du lettres." París, 1751-1772.

Volume VIII, includes the topic of "monnoyage," or coining, and utilizes 17 engraved plates to depict the "industrial" process and tools employed in the production of coin. Such as are seen in this group of plates, along with two additional plates depicting various European coins of the time. Incidentally the latest dated coin in the illustrations is 1755, which falls within the issue period of the Encyclopedie. The plates are very clean and fresh-looking, and all would be admirable wall ornaments once framed. Size: 16" x 9-3/4" - one just a trifle smaller. Lot of 19 pieces.
