Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 5190
1929, $10 National Bank Note, FNB Barton, MD. . Fr-1801-1. . KL-1243. PCGS Extremely Fine 40.This is the finest known small size Barton note, bar none. In the last several years, a few of these have surfaced raising the current census to 17 notes. Nonetheless, this is still a very desiarble one-bank Allegany County town that is all but unavailable in large size. As a matter of fact, it is one of the few large size notes from this region not represented in the Rob Lehmann collection.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

A reoccuring theme throughout the Lehmann collection, this sale represents the first time that this extensive a collection of Allegany and Garrett County notes has ever been auctioned. We suggest an aggressive bid to take this note home. Remember, in 15 years of collecting this region, this is the finest example Rob could get hold of. That alone should tell you something!

Fr-1801-1. 1929, $10 National Bank Note, FNB Grantsville, MD. . Fr-1801-1. . KL-1243. PCGS Very Fine 20.Since large size notes are almost non-existant on this bank, a small size becomes a nice alternative. Still very rare, with only 8 notes reported, this note compared to the others is high-grade. Typical of much of Western Maryland, Grantsville was a agricultural and mining community where workers were prone to spending their notes rather than saving them. Of course, this is a one bank town.

Fr-1801-1. 1929, $10 National Bank Note, FNB Mount Savage, MD. . Fr-1801-1. . KL-1243. PCGS Very Fine 25 PPQ. There are few neater names of any bank in Maryland than Mount Savage. Kelly shows 12 notes, although this newly reported example is not one of them. This note is choicer than most, and although only a VF, it still one of the finer known. Again, this is a scarce one bank town.

Fr-1801-2. 1929, $10 National Bank Note, FNB Mount Savage, MD. . Fr-1801-2. . KL-1244. PCGS Very Fine 20.There were almost 6 times as many Type I $10's issued by this bank as there were Type II's. This might account for why the Type II's are so infrequently encountered. A nice note in all respects, this is also just plain "rare". These Mount Savage small sizes combined with their large counterparts in this sale represent the most extensive group of this bank ever assembled.

Therefore, this pair is on a PCGS card with hand written comments on the back-side. "Uncut pair XF-AU with a couple of sheet folds. Low serial #s (800-1200)". Fr-1801-1. 1929, $10 National Bank Note, Hoblitzell NB of Hyndman, PA. . Fr-1801-1. . KL-1243. PCGS Very Fine 20. The proliferation of Hyndman notes in this sale should not infer that these notes are common; quite the contrary! There is probably a fair percentage of all of the known notes on this bank in this one collection. And that's understandable, given Hyndman's proximity to Cumberland, MD. The present note is a pleasing circ. With 19 known notes in the census, these small size are no where near as scarce as their large counterparts. But, then again, they are quite a bit more affordable too.

Fr-1802-2. 1929, Serial #1 $20 National Bank Note, Hoblitzell NB of Hyndman, PA. . Fr-1802-2. . KL-1318. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 PPQ. As this is a Type II note, it is a true #1. Furthermore, only 100 Type II $20's were ever printed on this bank, adding to this note's desirability. A couple of light folds are what limits the grade on this note, which at arm's length, appears uncirculated. First, it's a $20 which is much tougher than the $10. Secondly, it has a little grade going for it, which is not the norm. Fr-1802-1. 1929, $20 National Bank Note, FNB Kitzmillerville, MD. . Fr-1802-1. . KL-1317. PCGS Fine-15. Once for the fun of it, Rob Lehmann took the 70 minute journey southwest to what is now Kitzmiller, MD just to see what it was. What he found was little more than an old street block surrounded by many abandoned buildings. Like a wild-west town, it is hard to imagine that this was once a flourishing community. Today, all notes from this town are rare. And if what's left of the town is any indication, it is doubtful that any new survivors are going to surface. This is a typical well-circulated fine note.
