Chesapeake & Ohio Canal $2.00 Note, Cumberland, MD. PCGS Apparent Fine 12. PCGS notes small holes and edge damage. This note was issued on May 1, 1838 by George Hoblitzel, a contractor on sections 353 and 356 of the C & O canal. Hoblitzel was also a prominent proprietor of a store in downtown Cumberland, MD. These notes were commonly accepted, not only by the issuer, but other local merchants throughout the area, as well. It is obvious that this one saw it's fair share of circulation. But in the same breath, we know of no others, and it's quite possibly unique. R-7, Shank 24.6.6.

Cumberland Bank of Alleghany $5.00 Note, Cumberland, MD, Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. This note has a vignette of early downtown Cumberland along with covered wagons and oxen in the foreground. As Cumberland grew into a commercially important center in the early part of the 19th century, several banks emerged to service the needs of the populous. This is a proof from one of the more prolific issuers of the day. However, it should still be noted that virtually all notes from this bank, this one included, are R-7. Not pictured in Shank's Maryland reference book, this proof is quite possibly unique. Haxby Md-160-G56 (SENC), Shank 30.3.11p.

Mount Savage Iron Works 50 Cent Note, Mount Savage, MD. PCGS Apparent Very Good 8. Although this note is heavily circulated, and PCGS notes "major restorations", it is still one of the most important obsolete notes in the Lehmann collection. Mount Savage, originally called Jennons Run, was known for their iron works plant, one of the largest such facilities in the country. The plant was the first to manufacture solid track rail for the nation's railroads. This note was issued for use at their company store. Although unique is a strong word, it has long been rumored amongst Maryland collectors, that this is the one and only known example of this note.
