Lot 3209
Fr-350. 1891, $1 Coin Note. PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ. . Fr-350. . KL-58. A fantastic note with fresh colors, fresh paper, and endless possibilities for the collector. Probably the "Finest Known" in fact! Pop 1.

These notes were issued as a result of the Legal Tender Act of July 14, 1890. This Act authorized the Secretary of the Treasury to issue notes in payment for silver bullion purchased by the Treasury Department. The entire issue of 1890-91 series notes thus became backed by metallic reserves. The notes were redeemable in actual coin, but whether silver or gold coin should be paid out was left to the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Fr-357. 1891, $2 Coin Note. PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ. . Fr-357. . KL-144. Another fresh brilliant note, one of the predominant scarcities in the 1890-91 Treasury Note series, it has a portrait of General McPherson.

The coin notes were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 1,000 Dollars of the series of 1890 and 1891. A 500 Dollar note with portrait of General Sherman was also authorized and a plate made, but only a proof impression of the note is known; it was not placed in circulation. Because this series of paper money caused a drain on the Treasury's gold, it was soon abolished (later 1890s) and just as soon forgotten by the public, but clearly not by the collectors of this fascinating hobby!
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1891, $5 Coin Note. PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. . Fr-363. . KL-257. General George H. Thomas is the hirsute gentleman on the front of this scarce Treasury Note of 1891. He was the Union Army general during the Civil War famous as the "rock of Chicamauga." His portrait was engraved by Lorenzo J. Hatch. This is a particularly fresh looking Gem with its red seal and red serial numbers against an intricate field of black design. The back of the note is printed in dark green.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
