Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1557
1920-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Well struck and fully bright and lustrous. The only weakness seems to be the ground line above the date, which merges into the tops of some of the numerals. Very few marks for the grade, thus our PQ description. Pop 92; 43 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 6581) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Lot 1558
1921 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice original toning. A confidently struck Gem that whose visual display is improved by deep brown and "old silver" toning over the satiny luster. Although this date is normally found sharp, this coin in particular is even sharper, with boldness on Liberty's head and hand. One of the key issues in the series, since before the second World War 1921 dated half dollars were in strong demand as each mint's limited mintage fell during the short interlude between the two major 20th century wars; production was not needed, so mintage declined. Of course, 1921 is often regarded as a major irritant for date collectors since finding just the right coin requires persistence more than money, unlike commoner walking Liberty half dollar dates. This handsome toned specimen should find ready collectors who appreciate the original color, strong luster and extra-choice surfaces. Scarce so well preserved, and difficult to obtain finer than the present MS64. Pop 89; 61 in 65; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 6583) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 9,500.

Lot 1559
1921 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded AU-50. Lightly toned and a popular key date, this example has some luster around the main devices and just moderate wear from circulation on the upper lines of the skirt, the body, and on the eagle. Mintage of 246,000 assures its standing in the rarity profile. Pop 15. (PCGS # 6583) .

Lot 1561
1927-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely blue and gold toning on the obv. The reverse is light golden toning. Only 2.3 million pieces were struck of the 1927-S half, making it one of the scarcer strike and condition rarities in the Walking Liberty set. For no good reason other than because it happened, most of the mintage entered the channels of commerce, as this issue is only really common in grades below the Extremely Fine level; virtually none showed up in rolls or collector hoards. This is a marvelous example of the date, one of the few Mint State 65 examples we have ever offered, plus it comes with just marvelous color! This issue is famous also for its fresh-faced luster, but again, this coin shows even prettier thickest mint frost imaginable, which is aided by its gem state of preservation. As one might infer from the grade, a coin uncommonly clean underneath all that beautiful toning! Pop 50; 6 in 66. (PCGS # 6587) .
Estimated Value $8,500 - 9,500.

1927-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Very clean surfaces. Lightly toned. Some marks on the leg and body, and minor weakness of the hand where it crosses the leg. Pop 235; 50 in 65; 5 in 66. (PCGS # 6587) .

If you have ever wondered what things cost back in the year this fifty-cent piece was made, we have been looking over our books, magazines and souvenir sale catalogs, and it looks like 1927 -- the year Charles Lindberg earned his fame -- would have been a banner year for dancing:

It cost fifty cents to get into the Savoy Ballroom
A steak sandwich at the Cotton Club cost $1.25
You could buy a phonograph record for $0.39
A raccoon coat would set you back $39.50
A console radio was $72.50
A man's suit (coat, vest, 2 pair of pants) was $15.85.
Estimated Value $2,600 - 3,000.

1927-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Old green holder. Nice white example. A beautiful frosty coin, with riveting appeal from crystal-white fields. Struck with preciseness only now and then found on 1927-S, although we must defer to the experts when it comes to the normal softness found at the centers, particularly on the hand and a little weakness (but only a little) on Liberty's hair line and the central part of the eagle's body. Pop 235; 50 in 65; 5 in 66. (PCGS # 6587) .

1928-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice white coin. A lustrous '28-S that has exceedingly choice, almost gem quality surfaces and a very decent strike. Struck from well-made dies that imported a sound but not overly bold design in the following areas: head, hand, upper skirt lines, and eagle's body at the junction of the wing. The fields show a very comfortable amount of snowy white frostiness. Pop 123; 42 in 65; 6 in 66. (PCGS # 6588) .

1934-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice white coin. well struck. A satiny and lustrous gem with a nuance of faint silvery iridescence on both sides to accompany the stark whiteness of the frost. The strike is unusually complete for 1934-S, far and away better than those with the usual a hint of weakness seen at the hand and eagle's body. This is a scarce date, especially in Gem MS-65 condition (PCGS # 6594) .

1935-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Lightly toned and well struck. Liberty's head is a full struck up example. Scarce this nice. Walking Liberty half dollars are irresistible to most collectors, and the 1935-D is among the scarcer ones in top condition since many were placed in circulation, others weren't all that well made. If you don't want to wait for another gleaming MS66 to come along, then a strong bid might just cause the auctioneer to award this coin to you. Pop 59; none finer. (PCGS # 6596) .

1936 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 64. We note a reverse die crack. Very rare on a modern proof. Brilliant white. For that matter, an intensely beautiful white walking Liberty, a coin with superb mirror luster and a strike that is amazingly close to complete. Intense white color suggests that the present specimen spent much of its life away from the tarnish-inducing cardboard albums or paper coin envelopes which often obscure the delicate mirror features on these (PCGS # 6636) .

1938-D. NGC graded MS-65. Nice white example. Fully struck and brilliant throughout with no distracting abrasions present. Mathematically exact standards would seen in the sharp centers, but this date is noteworthy for its "average" detail in the key hand area where it passes across the thigh. As it is, the coin is squarely in gem quality. Mintage: 491,600 pieces, lowest in the 1930s or 1940s (PCGS # 6605) .

1941-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Isolated swirls of silvery white iridescence confirm the originality of this scarcer S-mint example. Fully lustrous and quite clean for the issue. What's more, even though the devices that were left by the dies lack a certain precision due to insufficient die pressure, it often found this way on this date. A gem (PCGS # 6613) .

1942 Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 67. Intense rainbow toning on both sides. Satin surfaces that are almost frosted with pleasant, glowing silver color underneath this marvelous array of pastels and deeper toning. So much, then, for the luster. As for the devices, these were struck with sufficient power by the dies that they left all design elements showing, and showing clearly, unlike many where a few areas mushy. Liberty even has a clear thumb. Could bring a record price (PCGS # 6642) .

1945-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Lovely blue and gold obv toning while the reverse is light hint of gold toning. A simply exquisite Gem, the heavily frosted surfaces gyrate to-and-fro with full, starbright textured luster under what has to be some of the more spectacular toning seen on a 1945-D. What one sees usually on this mint's coinage is an unconvincing impression left by the recoil of the dies; greatly to our pleasure and the bidders' enjoyment, on the other hand, that is not the case here. This coin is sharp, very sharp, in fact, with only the head on Liberty a little soft as it has a minor scuff on it (PCGS # 6625) .
