1895 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Well struck and a blast white coin. Baking white luster, in fact, on satiny surfaces surrounded by smooth, glassy fields on both sides. Makes you head spin to stare at it for any length of time. What's more, a bold strike on the reverse carries over to the obverse in every fine point, here it is clear that the dies were spaced just close enough to encourage metal flow into the centers. So all in all a pristine quality Gem Cameo Proof! Only 880 Proofs issued. Pop 8; 8 finer.

1895 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. A nice fully white example. A lock-solid frosty gem Proof 66 with customary luster on the frosted devices and rich mirrored fields on both sides. More than adequately struck for the date, it isn't even half a point shy of full 100% so, since this issue rarely is, the coin gets praise where fullness of design is concerned. 1897 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. Untoned white gem. Almost a perfect coin. An elevated degree of blistering white frosted luster springs to life on the bold devices of this magnificent Gem Proof. No yielding either, in the strike, whether at the reverse, or on the imposing obverse design. In fact, much more detail can be found on the Proofs than on a typical business strike example of the date. A rock-solid gem that will delight anyone! Only 731 Proofs made. Nicely struck, in fact, totally - so sharp and full that special mention is merited along with inclusion in our description of the lovely frosted relief on Liberty and the eagle. Indeed, the strike of the present coin easily rivals that of just about any other Proof Barber half dollar ever made. Only 731 Proofs issued in 1897. Pop 4; 16 finer.

Lot 1515
1897 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A nice untoned example. Bright silver color bursts from original surfaces unmarred by toning on this handsome Barber coin from the 1890s. A strong strike as well, making this a desirable Gem Proof specimen. As with the other coins from the same consignment of gems, this too displays a precision strike on the legends and main, well-frosted device, which is unusual except for the very finest specimens. Only 731 proofs struck. Pop 5; 4 in 66Cam; 4 in 67Cam (PCGS # 86544) .

1900-S Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Nicely toned. Well struck. A few flyspecks in the toning and some faint hairlines on the cheek. There is little to say about the choice surfaces of this coin as they are very frosty. The mint frost is thick and radiates intensely over each side. This is typical of the San Francisco half dollars struck during the time Barber half dollars were current. Pop 12; 6 in 65; 3 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 6488) .

Lot 1517
1901 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. A wonderful white gem. Full white brilliance enhances the glittering mint bloom that covers the surfaces, giving the coin a shimmering, glowing appearance. The original "all brilliant" device of Liberty is only interrupted by an occasional speck frosty patina. It is easy to see this piece was delivered a hard blow by the special chrome-plated Proof dies, or as some researchers believe, the dies were brand new and carefully set in the equipment to impart the requisite force, all of which imparted their sharpness to the struck planchet. Only 813 proofs struck. Pop 5; 5 finer at NGC.

1901 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Blast white coin. Has a cameo effect. A first-rate gem with richly permeating "all brilliant" high points that flow across the mirror lakes on both sides with uncommonly fresh surfaces. Satisfactorily struck as well for the Proof quality, indeed, about as excellent as this date is ever found and sure to please even the most discriminating buyer. The coin's designer, Charles Barber, would have loved this one! (Come to think of it, he might have seen this one, since he was still living when it was made; Barber died in 1917.) 1903 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. A dazzling white gem. A high degree of luster distinguishes the faint satiny silver surfaces from others of the date which are less pulsating even though in technically similar grade. Collectors familiar with the series will recognize the "all brilliant" finish of dates struck in 1901 to 1904. This occurs on the other Barber denominations as well as the gold Proofs of those years. Lot 1526
1906 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Brilliant white and worthy of a "Cameo" designation. The wintry blast of white luster is utterly pleasing on this glowing Proof, a coin of uncommon beauty in one of the more popularly collected denominations.

The obverse of the Barber half dollar depicts Liberty as a mirror image of the Morgan silver dollar, with a laurel wreath on her head, and her hair tucked up under her cap instead of cascading onto her shoulders as on the silver dollar. Charles Barber adapted the reverse design from the Great Seal of the United States, very similar to what Robert Scot had done 91 years earlier on silver and gold coinage although the workmanship is much more technically proficient. 1911 Barber Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. Only 682 proofs struck. A nice white coin with a cameo effect. An exciting example of a relatively well made date, this untoned coin displaying sharp mirror luster constrasted with frost on the devices. Often, a less than full impact was left by the recoil of the ies that struck this year's coinage; but in a few instances like the present one, the opposite is the case and the coin has a very convincing impression. Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, highly regarded today, evoked mixed reactions when it made its debut. "At last we have on our coins the great American eagle in a natural, lifelike form," The Numismatist said. "As represented on the half dollar he is, as the small boy would say, 'some bird,' and his size and proportions are in keeping with the greatness and power of the country."

However, ornithologist Frank M. Chapman chided, "The artist has made this bird a terrestrial fowl, striding or marching on the ground like a turkey- cock, and with as much dignity as one." Another critic said, "The eagle looks as though it were wearing overalls and marching through hot tar." Still another said, "Liberty in sandals taking giant strides across its face might burn her toes if she should step one millimeter nearer the rising sun."

Mint authorities knew well that the Weinman design of 1916, despite its great artistic merits, no matter how thorough engraver Charles Barber's original attempts to reduce relief, was technically unsatisfactory in a few areas where high points of the design fell opposite one another: Liberty's head and hand, the upper thigh, and the eagle's central body. Lot 1555
1919-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Quite choice with very few marks for this grade. A trigle soft in the centers. Satiny surfaces just starting to tone. The 1919-D, even in the top condition, is weakly struck and often shows indefinite centers. They are almost always weak in the hand and head area on the obverse, with similar softness in the detail on the eagle's leg and body. Even this example, which has substantial design showing, is not fully struck. Just the same, anyone who collects early Walking Liberty half dollars appreciates the date's rarity. Any collector who hopes to obtain some of the nicest Walkers will want to consider this specimen for his set. It has smooth-flowing satiny silver luster under the toning with only light marks for the Mint State 63 grade. Pop 39; 69 in 64; 10 in 65; 1 in 66. (PCGS # 6578) .
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.
