Lot 637
1796 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck with lovely blue, grey and gold toning that is really a treat to view and examine in detail. Great hair and eagle detail as well exemplifies this draped bust, small eagle design. For the collector of early silver coinage, it is always a special feeling to see a nicely struck coin like this, and unlike the 1796 dimes which have the faintest touch of weakness at the centers, this exemplary coin is bold. While 1796 Mint State dimes are not the rarest items in the American pantheon, a number seem to have survived in Mint State condition, perhaps saved as first of the species by visitors from England and Europe. They are very rare this nice, of course, with the grade Mint State 64 have as a feature all the desirability of choice condition, toning, strike, and strong attention from Type Set collectors. Moreover, first year coins have always had a special demand, and a set focused on these issues could find a new highlight with the purchase of this coin. Pop 15; 7 in 65; 8 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 4461) .

Triple leaf at ST of STATES; 4 berries in wreath. This obverse has the closest date of the 6 varieties of 1796, the first star away from the curl.

1797 Draped Bust Dime. 16 stars. NGC graded EF-40. Well distributed and definitely "old silver" patina with russet and blue-gray accents, some areas are more deeply toned than others. There are numerous but fine hairline scratches under the toning, plus some slight planchet adjustment lines made at the time of issue. This is an otherwise decently struck example, with nice detail to all the important high points, with the possible exception of these regions (standard for the issue): central hair curls and "lovelock" at Liberty's ear; the eagle's neck and head, plus the upper portion of STATES. Pop 1; 6 finer. A total of 12 graded by NGC.

1798 Draped Bust Dime. Large 8. NGC graded AU-58. 2 die cracks on the obv. One bisects Liberty. Breen refers to this variety as a "Medium 8" but it is easy to decipher from the distinctive die break from the rim to Y. Later (this is from an middle state of the die) the Y-break continues and deepens all the way to Liberty's nose. Another extends from her chin into the field. Medium antique greyish-violet toning. A choice, lustrous eaxmple and quite scarce. Only 27,550 minted of the 1798 dime, all varieties combined. Pop 8 with 18 better. (PCGS # 4466) .

1798 Draped Bust Dime. 98 over 97. 16 stars. PCGS graded AU-50. Silver grey toning with deeper shades of charcoal gray and russet around the stars and lower obverse. Typical uneven strike for this scarce overdate, with lack of hair definition seen at the center of Liberty's head. The rims, too, show little in the way of rim denticles, as these too were weakly impressed by the dies. A scarce variety. Pop 3; 24 Finer. (PCGS # 4468) .

1800 Draped Bust Dime. PCGS graded AU-58. Well struck and problem-free. Frsoty luster overlaid with light golden and greyish-violet toning. A lovely example of JR-1, the first of two die varieties and the most often seen. That is not to say 1800 dimes themselves are often seen, even in well circulated grades this year is very difficult. An extremely pleasing AU-58 should attract a lot of attention from collectors, so prepare yourselves. Pop 3, 4 better. (PCGS # 4470) .

1807. PCGS graded MS-62. Mostly white with a hint of light gold toning. A nice example. Only the single die variety this year, JR-1. The dies were used to such an extent that they wore out and had to be repeatedly relapped to remove clash marks. This is from a later stage in which the centers as well as the stars are typically weak. Pop 18; 72 finer. (PCGS # 4480) .

1809 Capped Bust Dime. NGC graded MS-64. Very choice. Sparkling with luster and a hint of natural golden toning about the borders. A lovely example of the 1809 dime, the present piece is in exceptionally high grade, indeed Condition Census within the PCGS enumeration. Both obverse and reverse are deeply and richly lustrous, overlaid with light lilac and gray toning, evolving to hints of blue at the borders. At the center the striking details are exquisite, indeed marvelous. At the obverse border left and right the star centers are light, this being about par for the 1809 issue. All told it is a superior example of the date and type. Pop 3; 2 in 65.

1814 Capped Bust Dime. Small date. PCGS graded MS-62. Old green holder. Original russet and deep iridescent steel-gray patina with reddish tints in the russet color to cause it to appear like smooth amber. The underlying surface is quite frosted, while Liberty has distinctive sharp hair curls, a full but not bold drapery and clasp. As often encountered, some of the stars are weak to very flat due to unevenness in the strike or possibly to die bulging. Most noticeable are the flat stars behind the head. Choice throughout and completely original without cleaning. Pop 3; 2 in 64; 1 in 65. Only 15 total graded by PCGS (PCGS # 4489) .

1821 Capped Bust Dime. Small date. NGC graded MS-64. Needle sharp. A beautiful untoned example which has nice frosty white luster from center to periphery. With a mintage for the year of 1,186,512, some Large Date and Small Date varieites can be found quite easily. Regarding the relative populations of two date sizes, PCGS and NGC on average have graded about one-tenth the number of Small Dates as they have Large Dates. Therefore, this variety is going to be more difficult to acquire. The Small Date appears to hug the rim at 6:00. The three known Small Date die marriages are fairly common (JR-10 being scarcest). 1839 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded MS-68. Incredibly sharp with flashy gorgeous iridescent blue and purple toning. Looks and sparkles like a gem Proof in appearance. A common enough seated Liberty dime in lesser Mint State grades, the 1839 has a Rarity-1 rating in terms of total number of coins extant. This factor increases to Rarity-3 or higher when one considers only Mint quality examples, but even that rarity level pales when we consider the amazing coin in this lot. At the MS-68 level, forgetting about coins with a star designation for a moment, PCGS and NGC report so few examples that seated Liberty collectors are left gasping for breath. And best of all, there are none finer. As far as MS-68 * coins are concerned, PCGS doesn't use NGC's star-rating, but surely this piece is presently among the most spectacular coins around with "eye appeal" to spare! A stellar-quality representative of the short-lived No Drapery series of 1838-1840. This pristine gem is a candidate for "Finest Known". Pop 4 with 1 in MS-68 Star. (PCGS # 4571) .

1842-O Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded AU-50. Well struck with light grey toning. Indeed, extremely well struck for an early New Orleans quarter, with full detail on both the obverse and reverse. The 1842-O Large Date quarter has a relatively high mintage figure and it would seem to be a common coin, given its relative availability in low grades, but not middle circulated grades, definitely much scarcer than generally believed in the higher circulated grades (and it is of course a great rarity in Mint State). Lot 653
1843 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 64. Lovely shades of gold, lilac and blue toning. The 1843 is just a little less rare than the 1842 but that should not imply that this date is all that much easier to acquire in Proof because it is not. There are as few as 10 Proofs surviving from 1843 but even Eliasberg, Lovejoy, and Starr did not own one (and their collections included some exceptionally rare Dimes). Why there should be a few more surviving Proof 1843 than 1842 Dimes is a mystery since there were no more collectors around in the former than the latter year. Nor was 1843 a special year that might have occasioned a larger interest in owning Proofs, occasions in the past when the Mint provided Proofs for gifts to visitors to the Mint or government dignitaries.   1855 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Arrows Proof 64. An outstanding specimen. Boldly struck with blazing creamy-white mirror surfaces. A sparkling near-gem Proof with light golden toning over well mirrored Proof surfaces. The Proof 1855 Arrows seated Liberty dime appears in auction slightly more than twice as often than the rarer 1854 Arrows, which is contrary to logic since it should really appear for sale even more frequently if its rarity were to truly predict its availability. There are possibly 30 Proofs of this date known. If you are desperate to own an early Proof, and one with consequence like the Arrows Type, don't give up the struggle but submit your bid today. It may take a lofty bid to obtain it, but in the end, the result will be very rewarding. Pop 5; 3 in PF-65. (PCGS # 4744) .

Very few have been certified Mint State 64 level. As a date, 1874-S is a scarce issue from a mintage of 240,000 coins. 1916 Mercury Dime. NGC graded MS-68 Full Bands. Beautiful deep toning. A incandescent and sparkling gem whose satiny beauty resides underneath absolutely pristine and boldly defined design features. Plus, as we noted already, and as the photographs amply show, there is a torrent of varying toning hues on both sides. Utter perfection in a first-year Mercury Dime. Pop 12; 2 in 68 Star.

The Mercury dimes reverse features a fasces, the ancient symbol of power and authority carried by Roman magistrates in the days of Ancient Rome. The fasces was a wooden handled ax encased within a circle of wood or iron rods. The rods were held securely against the handle by a leather thong wound around them both horizontally and diagonally. Above the rods protruded the ax head.

Balancing the forces of war and peace, the fasces as depicted on the dime is intertwined with an olive branch. Arranged peripherally in large letters are the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and the denomination ONE DIME below (PCGS # 4905) .

1916-D Mercury Dime. PCGS graded MS-64 Full Bands. Well struck and white. As is often seen, the imprint that was left by the dies shows a wonderful sharpness on a the hair above Liberty's brow, the wing, and of course the central bands and rods of the fasces, but this coin stands out even for this key date! It has an incredibly clear sharp strike. Crisp bloom from the dies; a very choice specimen whose luster is all original. In "The Silver Coinage of 1916 - An Artistic Renaissance," Thomas S. LaMarre mentions in referring to the new designs introduced in 1916, "the Winged Liberty Head dime was first to appear, entering circulation in the latter part of October 1916. 'The design of the dime, owing to the smallness of the coin, has been held quite simple,' Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken said. 'The obverse shows a head of Liberty with winged cap. The head is firm and simple in form; the profile forceful. The reverse shows a design of the bundle of rods, with battle-ax, known as Fasces, and symbolical of unity, wherein lies the Nation's strength. Surrounding the fasces is a full-foliaged branch of olive, symbolical of peace.'".
