Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia (1886-1941) King and Queen of Spain; deposed by Franco in 1931. Three-quarter, seated Photograph of the King in uniform Signed and Inscribed, "To Mr. Sheldon Whitehouse. Alfonso HRH," below the 8½x6¼" photo, on the 13½x9" mount, which has an embossed crown at top. Photo by Kavlak, Madrid. Very fine. With a waist-length Photograph of the Queen Signed and dated, "Victoria Eugenia / Madrid, 1930" across the left side of her chest and arm, and inscribed "For Mr. Whitehouse" on the mount, which is 14½"x11¼"; a presentation photo by the London photographer, who signed at lower left. Minor foxing at edge of mount, else fine.

Charles and Diana. Christmas Card c. 1990 Signed "from Charles" in Charles' handwriting and "and Diana" in Diana's handwriting. A color photograph shows the couple with princes William and Harry. Elaborately matted and framed to an overall size of 15½"x23¼". Excellent condition.

Charles and Diana - Signed Commemorative Plate. Plate commemorating the marriage of Charles and Diana inscibed to an illegible name at top in Charles' hand, followed by "from Charles and"; Diana added, "Yours Sincerely, Diana Spencer." A portrait of the couple is at center. Above is printed: "To Commemorate The Marriage Of" and below: "H.R.H. Prince Charles & Lady Diana Spencer / July 1981." The edges are decorated with wedding bells. The china plate was made by Johnson Ceramics; on the verso is the white label with three pendants from Charles' coat of arms with his motto, "Ich Dien" (I serve). Excellent condition.

Charles II (1630-1685) King of England and Scotland. Autograph Letter Signed (with sign manual), 1 p., 7¾"x6", n.p., n.d., "friday afternoone" (early 1660s). With holograph address leaf, "For the Chancelor." Very good; some soiling, inlaid address leaf. To Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon.

The King writes with urgency: "There are many thinges of great importance to be thought of, in particular that of Ireland, as likwise there is some inteligence come to me this day, that rogues in the army are hatching villany against me wh[ich] must be timely prevented. It would be very necessary that insteed of going tomorrow to the Par[liame]nt you would come hether, at least that you would dine heere."

The first Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was chief minister to Charles II after his restoration. Clarendon became identified with a series of highly restrictive religious laws, the Clarendon Code, which tightened restrictions on Presbyterians, Catholics, and other non-conforming sects. In 1668, Clarendon was used as a scapegoat for the Second Dutch War and impeached by the House of Commons for high treason; he fled to France.

Ferdinand I (1793-1875) Emperor of Austria. Feeble-minded and epileptic, he was placed on the throne as Metternich's puppet. Letter Signed, 1p, 12"x8", Vienna, 1847 Oct. 15. Fine. to the King of the Two Sicilies, in Latin, announcing the sudden "death in Venice" of Archduke Frederick Ferdinand Leopold. With original envelope.

George IV. King of Great Britain. Document Signed "George R." as King, 2pp (1 sheet), 14½"x9½", Carlton House, 1822 Oct. 25. With docketed integral leaf. Fine; printed on laid, watermarked paper, a few contemporary ink smears, soiling to docket leaf. The King approves an annuity to François Serra, "late Footman to Her Majesty." George IV separated from Queen Caroline in 1796, but when he ascended to the throne in 1820, she refused to give up her rights as queen. The House of Lords brought action (later dropped) for divorce on the grounds of adultery. A huge signature.

Napoleon I (1769-1821) General of the French Revolution, ruler of France as First Consul, and Emperor of the French and King of Italy. Document Signed "Napoleon" as Emperor, 1 p. vellum, 15"x20", Toulouse, 1808 July 27. Fine; lower left corner is wrinkled and a tear affects the signature of Cambacérès, Arch-chancellor of the Empire; some show-through from seals and docket on verso. A formal document creating Jean Antoine Joseph De Bry Chevalier de l'Empire. It states that De Bry was made a member of the Légion d'Honneur on the 25th Prairial Year 12 (1804), that Napoleon had decreed on March 1, 1808 that all members of the Légion d'Honneur would carry the title of Chevalier and that their titles would descend through their legitimate first-born male heirs. Matted and framed to 22"x26½".

The Légion d'Honneur was an Order of Chivalry instituted by Napoleon as First Consul of the French Republic on May 19, 1802 as a system of reward for merit. As a member of the National Convention, Jean Antoine Joseph de Bry (1760-1834) voted for the death sentence at the trial of King Louis XVI. He supported Napoleon and the coup Brumaire (Nov. 9-10 1799), then served as prefect of Doubs and Bas-Rhin. He was created Chevalier de l'Empire with this document, and in 1809 he was made a baron. He was proscribed as a regicide in 1816 and lived in the Netherlands until 1830, when he returned to France.

(Peter the Great). Pyotr Alekseyevich (1672-1725), czar of Russia (1682-1725). A giant of a man for the time, 6 feet 7 inches, he introduced western European civilization into Russian and raised his country to the level of the great European powers. Oil on canvas portrait of Peter by an unidentified artist; this same image is used on some Russian coinage. Framed to an overall size of 28½"x24½". Ready for display.

Autograph Letter Signed on notepaper with the British coat of arms, 2pp (1 sheet), 7½"x4¾", Sandringham, Norfolk, 1965 Jan. 12. Fine. To Major A. David, regarding possible dates for a cocktail party. He adds, "I had some splendid polo in Mexico and one rather hectic game in Morocco. I am hoping to play in Jaiput in March…." Transmittal envelope bears the royal stamp "EIIR."

Romanova, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960) Youngest child of Tsar Alexander III and sister of ill-fated Tsar Nicholas II. Three Autograph Notes Signed to her mother, the former queen (Nicholas became tsar in 1894 and ruled until his abdication in 1917; he and his family were executed in 1918). All three notes are in English; one is dated 1900, one 1910, and one is undated. All are pre-Russian Revolution and all concern Olga's and her mother's health. Matted with an envelope, an image of Olga, a piece of Russian money, and a couple of decorative items. Nicely framed to 24"x30". Fine condition. Olga, her second husband (Colonel Nicholas Kulikovsky) and their children lived in exile in Denmark and Canada after the Revolution. Olga was a renowned artist.
