Gore, Al (1948 -) Vice president of the United States (1993-2001). Typed Letter Signed on "Office of the Former Vice Presdent" letterhead, 1p, 10¼"x7", n.p., 2001 Mar. 15, thanking a former classmate at St. Albans for a t-shirt, one of 50 created after the controversial 2000 presidential election. One of the t-shirts is framed with the letter. Making reference to the irregularities involving the infamous Palm Beach "butterfly" ballot, the t-shirt avoids any confusion by showing Gore as the only choice for November 7, 2004. Framed to an overall size of 17"x29½". Excellent condition.

Chase" one month after President Lincoln accepted his resignation as Secretary of the Treasury, 1p, 8"x5", Beverly, Mass., 1864 July 25. Very fine. To his successor, William P. Fessenden. In part: "Col. Browne, Secretary of Gov. Andrews desires me to say to you that he was constituted Agent to arrange all money matters of Dr. Gwynn with the department….I was glad to have a gentleman of… intelligence & unimpeachable integrity…to attend to these matters….the important undertaking…would be …one of immense advantage to the country." Three months later, Lincoln appointed Chase Supreme Court Chief Justice to replace Roger Taney.

Faubus, Orval E (1910-1994) Segregationist governor of Arkansas (1955-67); in 1957 called out the Arkansas National Guard to try to prevent the integration of Central High School in Little Rock. Very good; some soiling. Four Typed Letters Signed as Governor, on official letterhead, 1p each, 1960. 1964, and 1965, to George A. Hall, a supporter, plus a signed and inscribed photocopy of a page about him from a 1957 Time magazine He warns, "…we no longer owe loyalty to a Party when it no longer stands for the best interests of the country," foreseeing the South's abandonment of the Democratic party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

Hamilton, Alexander (1757-1804) American politician; leader of the Federalists; first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. Letter Signed "A. Hamilton" as Secretary of the Treasury, 2pp, 12"x7½", Treasury Department, 1791 Aug. 26. Matted to show both sides of letter to 18"x21½". Fine; a few edge chips. To John Brown, a lawyer and Virginia congressman who introduced the petition for Kentucky statehood and who served as senator from Kentucky when that state was admitted to the Union. Hamilton writes regarding the contract for the Baltimore firm of Elliott and Williams to supply western military posts. In part: "…there appears to have been a misapprehension of the purport of my communication to you. I said, that I had advanced within four or five thousand Dollars of the whole sum, which it appeared probable would be due according to an estimate made between the Secretary of War - the Agents of Messrs. Elliot and Williams - and myself, from the best documents and materials in the possession of all the Parties; not according to the estimate of Messrs Elliot & Williams….it is desireable that the truth should be understood with precision…."

Mifflin, Thomas (1744-1800) George Washington's aide-de-camp; Revolutionary War general; president of the Continental Congress; governor of Pennsylvania. Partly-printed Document Signed "Tho Mifflin" as governor of Pennsylvania, vellum, 12½"x22" (Philadelphia), 1794 Oct. 7. Countersigned by A.J. Dallas (1759-1817) as secretary; he would become Madison's secretary of the treasury. Fine; some translucence and toning to top of vellum. A land grant to Andrew Swearingen on Panther Lane, in a town being created near "where the old French town stood." Mifflin signed under the large paper seal at upper left. Matted with an image of Mifflin and a plaque and handsomely framed to an overall size of 25"x43¼". Am impressive display piece.

Letter Signed as Register of the Treasury, 1p, 9¾"x7¾" (Washington City), 1806 Feb 4. Poor to fair; several fold splits need repair. To David Hoge, Register of the Land Office in Steubenville, asking for proof that payments have been made on land purchased by Josiah Updegraff and Samuel Brown. With Free Frank on address leaf (heavily toned), as well as two "FREE".stamps.

An eclectic group of approximately 35 items, including a mixture of photographs, letters, and cards signed by congressmen and senators such as Eugene McCarthy, Ramsey Clark, John McCormack, and Patsy Mink,and sent to an autograph collector in California, most of them during the 1960s. Other items are: an 1867 New York check paying Tammany Hall politician Richard Croker's salary as a Supreme Court officer, signed by Mayor John T. Hoffman; a 7"x5" Franklin D. Roosevelt campaign silk in red, gray and blue; a 1949 Inaugural Gala program for Truman/Barkley; cards signed by Robert Moses, Admiral Arleigh Burke, and General Edwin A. Walker; a 10"x8" photo of LBJ and Lady Bird; a sheet of "Nixon Now" stamps, and a sheet of stamps from Radio of Free Asia. Also, a Gen. Westmoreland TLS as Chief of Staff, sending autograph. Overall very good to fine.

Spinner, Francis (1802-1890) Appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Lincoln in March 1861; he served in that position until July 1875. Four Checks Signed "F.E. Spinner," three with "Jr." and one without, drawn on the First National Bank of Florida between 1883 and 1890, the year of his death, and paid to various parties. Very good; some edge staining and minor soiling. Spinner's beautiful, inimitable signature is a little shaky due to old age.
