Before the working dies are used in the coining presses, they are hardened and tempered. Each working die struck an average of 160,000 Morgan dollars. An average of up to 500,000 Peace dollars were struck per working die, because of more advanced metal technology and because the design was shallower with rounded lettering.

All S-mint dollars of the Morgan series were struck at the famous "Old Granite Lady" mint on Mission Street at the corner of 5th in downtown San Francisco. The mint still stands (how could it do otherwise, it is a hulking big edifice), but is sadly shuttered and awaits funding for restoration (PCGS # 7082) .
