Lot 1848
1800 Draped Bust Dollar. "Dotted date" from die breaks. NGC graded VF-25. BB-194. Our consignor seems to have had a fondness for this Red Book die variety, acquiring an assortment of grades, all of them pleasing to the eye with natural "old silver" patina and surfaces. This piece has a single small mark at Liberty's throat but is, with the rest, a carefully graded and obviously hand-picked coin (PCGS # 6889) .

Lot 1852
1800 Draped Bust Dollar. "AMERICAI". PCGS graded EF-45 BB-192, B-19. Nice even grey toning, dappled across the obverse in shades of deep antique gray to lighter shades of silver (PCGS # 6892) .

This reverse die is immediately recognizable by the plain die line following AMERICA -- seemingly reading AMERICAI, hence the coin's nickname. Perhaps this was the result of an errant die scratch from the engraver, or perhaps the engraver started punching the final A in AMERICA too far to one side and then corrected his mistake before completing the letter. In any event, the result is a noticeable and popular error with collectors.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 1853
1800 Draped Bust Dollar. "AMERICAI". PCGS graded VF-30. Toned to natural gray and russet borwn shades from long, careful preservation by its former owners who wer, undoubtedly, studied collectors of the bust dollar series. A die imperfection, possibly caused by the slip of the engraver's tool when finishing this reverse die, caused a raised line in the form of the letter "I". It's occurrence right after the word AMERICA accounts for this coin's nickname. It is a popular Red Book variety that all collectors will want to consider acquiring (PCGS # 6892) .

Lot 1855
1801 Draped Bust Dollar. PCGS graded EF-45. Somewhat streaked silvery to deep russet gray toning on both sides. Pop 35. In recent years, intense collecting activity has concentrated on silver dollars of 1794-1803, with the low mintage 1801, 1802, and 1803 performing even more spectacularly than the so-called common dates of 1798, 1799 and 1800. Mintage in 1801 was a paltry 54,454 pieces (PCGS # 6893) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Lot 1856
1801 Draped Bust Dollar. PCGS graded EF-45 B-1. Toned on both sides to a smooth, somewhat iridescent shade of slate-gray with lighter high points on the hair and eagle, so-called "rubbed silver" look from the minor friction it received while in circulation. Excellent detail in the hair curls and shoulder drapery, as well as a decent eagle for the 1801 issue. Only 54,454 pieces were coined (part of the reported mintage was dated 1800) (PCGS # 6893) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 1857
1802 Draped Bust Dollar. Narrow date. PCGS graded EF-45 BB-241, B-6. Light toning on both sides with shadings from russet to gray. Collectors who concentrate on the bust dollar series often point to 1802's better than average quality compared to some of the earlier dates. The mint's capability seems to progress admirably with these later pieces (PCGS # 6895) .

Lot 1858
1802 Draped Bust Dollar. Narrow date. PCGS graded VF-35 B-6; BB-241. Toned on both sides, a combination of deep grays with mid-level russet brown and some dusky purple shades. This is a scarce year from the end of the series, one of only 41,650 minted using multiple die combinations (in those days, a typical die might be able to strike no more than a few thousand pieces before it broke) (PCGS # 6895) .

Lot 1859
1802 Draped Bust Dollar. 2 over 1. Wide date. PCGS graded EF-40. Nicely toned if somewhat splotchy -- deeper grays and russet intermingles with lighter old-silver areas in the field and on the high points. We see no flaws in the surface or rim problems which require your attention. Early bust dollars are infrequently found this way, therefore talk the matter over with your friends or coin collecting buddies and then submit a bid (PCGS # 6899) .

Lot 1860
1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Sharpness of VF-35 B-6, BB-255. Cleaned and retoned. Some scratches on the right obverse fields.

Most Silver Dollars of 1801, 1802, and 1803 saw strictly limited circulation. This was because their high silver content made it profitable to ship newly coined Dollars overseas. Once overseas they would be melted and sent back to the Philadelphia Mint for re-coinage -- in an endless circle -- with a small, but useful, profit left after two-way shipping and melting costs! As this practice became more and more flagrant, mint officials decided to halt coinage rather than debase the silver content of the Dollar which would have stopped the practice. Thus, many early Bust Dollars circulated but a short while before shipment overseas. One can only imagine how a high quality specimen such as this could have survived the ravages of time yet remain virtually as nice as the day it was minted. Whatever the number extant, it is a sure bet that only a limited number can approach this coin for overall desirability and eye appeal, let alone top it.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.

1803 Draped Bust Dollar. Large 3. PCGS graded VF-35 BB-255; B-6. Bolender-6. Evenly toned on both sides, smoky gray to pinkish gold color. The large 3 punch appears only on this obverse and is believed to be part of the mintage struck in the year 1804. Only 85,634 bust dollars were made with the 1803 date from six distinct die pairings (PCGS # 6901) .
