Typical grade for this desirable brown back design -- the brown printing ink used on the back of these notes occurs only in the Second Charter, Third Period group. Earlier Second Charter notes use the same faces but with different backs using standard green ink instead of brown. In 1902, with the introduction of the new Third Charter period, the green back ink returns. PCGS graded Fine 15.

An especially attractive, well margined and balanced example of the dated back with signatures of Tillman and Morgan who were together signing notes (figuratively speaking) in the mid-1890s, when this note was produced (ignore the Series 1882 date as it doesn't refer to the actual time of issue). Only 2 known 1882 $10 dated backs on this bank. Collectors have a field day with national bank notes. Since there are many varieties, and within each variety a small number of surviving examples, low population figures abound, as seen here, with only 2 reported of the particular Type. PCGS graded Very Fine 20PPQ.

In 1859, the nation's first successful oil well was drilled near Titusville. Pennsylvania became a leader of textile, leather, iron and glass production.
