1802 Draped Bust Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. Bolender-6, Breen-5400. Type with wide space between 8 and 0. In addition, the right foot of the T in Liberty is missing. In numismatic circles, we have all heard the term "wonder coin". Well, this is a true wonder coin. At first glance, one might think it is a modern replica as it's so perfect. What we first notice is the color, or more properly, the lack of same. It is a white coin which has obviously, at some time in its past, been dipped. To deny it would be to foolishly deny the physical forces of nature. Two hundred year old coins don't stay white without help. Perhaps one of its previous owners wanted it white to match all the other white gem uncirculated. bust dollars in his collection. We'll never know, but it really does not matter, because the result is astonishing and quite pleasing…a wonderful brilliant specimen which shows off all the design details to best advantage. And if this coin had been toned darkly, we might not have been able to see how sharply struck it really is. The strike is superb. Every strand of Miss Liberty's hair is clearly defined as are all of the vertical and horizontal lines in the shield on reverse. Each arrow point and leaf vein is also amazingly clear. The surfaces are virtually immaculate and were it not for a few minor ticks on the bust, this specimen would be in a 65 holder. It may well be someday anyway. For diagnostic purposes, we'll mention a tiny natural planchet flaw as made just left of the arrow points. All in all, an important opportunity to acquire a coin worthy of the finest collection. For those who will be viewing lots, consider checking out this beauty even if you will not be a competitive bidder…as they just don't come along like this every day and it is lovely to behold. For those contemplating such a wondrous acquisition, then definitely check out this beauty…as they really don't come along like this every day! NGC population of 8 in this grade with 3 in MS-65.

Lot 393
1802 Draped Bust Dollar. Narrow date. PCGS graded EF-45. A well struck example of medium steel gray and quite choice overall. Free from nicks, scratches, adjustment marks and other defects. Of all the known Bust Dollars, this is one of the most common varieties. For some reason, these dies just kept on going, and thousands upon thousands were struck. This variety is quickly recognizable by the missing right foot (serif) on the T of LIBERTY, and the reverse has a small die break connecting the second feather from the top to the rim on the left wing of the eagle. The broken T punch was also used on the reverse of 1801 BB-213, B-3. Here is a wonderful high end Extremely Fine example for the type (PCGS # 6895) .

1855 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. A gorgeous creamy white brilliant proof example. The mirrors are quite deep and exceptionally choice. We note some trivial light hairlines but most of these appear to be on the holder and not on the coin. Although no mint records were kept for proofs of this year, it is safe to assume that the number struck was less than 100. PCGS reports 8 in this grade with 2 better by a point. 1861 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. A marvelous lightly toned proof seated dollar exhibiting a mostly uniform shade of light champagne. All devices are razor sharp and choice. There are some faint hairlines in the fields but none can be seen without the aid of magnification. Walter Breen noted that of the 1,000 proofs struck this year, 600 were melted as unsold. Any Civil War Proof Liberty Seated dollar is significant due to the fact that the business strikes of this era are almost never seen in high grade. 1861 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 62. This Civil War era Seated Dollar exhibits some light hairlines from a likely cleaning at some point in its history and a few contact marks are noted on the arrow shafts and just above the points, yet the relatively clean fields offer noticeable contrast to the central devices.   1870-CC Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded AU-55. A well struck example and white. The surfaces are semi-prooflike, particularly in the protected areas, with the normal allotment of small marks associated with this numerical grade and none worthy of note.

The year 1870-CC, the first year of issue for coins from this mint, is a magical date in U.S. numismatics, especially due to the heavy hitting gold rareties of the year. Only 12,462 silver dollars were minted and any example at the EF level or better is an important find. PCGS reports 30 at this level with 27 rated better (PCGS # 6964) .
