Arafat, Yasser (1929-2004) Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Glossy 7 x 5 in. Photograph Signed in English ("Y. Arafat"), c. 1980. A beaming portrait of the recently-deceased PLO leader. There are a couple of small blemishes on the forehead. Stamped on the back in Arabic and English.

Carranza, Venustiana (1859-1920) One of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution; President of Mexico 1915-1920. The current constitution of Mexico was drafted during his administration. Typed Letter Signed as First Chief of the Constitutional Army, Mexico, April 29, 1916, one page quarto. To General of Division Candido Aguilar, regarding an inquiry made by a woman about her son or husband. Carranza replies that Col. Teodoro Constantino Gilbert has received many complaints of abuse and violations in his command and that he has been retained in Veracruz at the disposition of the Military Command in order to rectify his conduct. Carranza signs as Aguilar's friend and "coreligionist." At upper left on the letterhead is an eagle with a snake in its beak, perched on a banner that says "Republica Mexicana," and below: "Primer Jefe del Ejercito Constitucionalista." Slight bleeding to ink in signature. Matted with a color image of Carranza to an overall size of 16 ½ x 7 ¾ inches.

Five months after he wrote this letter, Carranza called for a constitutional convention. On March 11, 1917, he was elected the first President under the new Mexican constitution of 1917. He was overthrown and assassinated in 1920.

(Castro, Fidel) Photograph Album (1927-) President of Cuba. A notebook of over 75 photographs, each in an individual sleeve, c. 1959 through the early 1960s. Many photos are marked for inclusion in Cuban newspapers. Castro is seen in the jungle, triumphantly entering cities after the overthrow of Batista, talking to various people (including Ernest Hemingway), visiting the United States in 1960 (there are two photos of him in front of the Lincoln monument), speaking to the United Nations, playing baseball, and much more. Some photos are by Korda; the majority are approximately 8 x 10 in. but they vary in size. Condition is very good to fine.

Chamberlain, Neville (1869-1940) British prime minister; tried to appease Hitler by signing the 1938 Munich Agreement. Photograph Signed and Inscribed, "To Miss Lamont with grateful recollections of her care and attention. Neville Chamberlain / June 1940," on the lower mount, n.p., 12½ x 10 inches (image is 8¾ x 7 inches). An elegant, seated portrait, signed the month after he resigned as prime minister and was replaced by Winston Churchill. There are a couple of chips and scratches on Chamberlain's jacket; the mount is lightly foxed.

de Gaulle, Charles (1890-1969) President of France (1958-1969); led French resistance during World War II. Photograph Signed ("C. de Gaulle") on the lower border of a three-quarter portrait in uniform, 10 x 8 inches. Stamped on the verso, "Howard Coster…London," which probably indicates that the photograph was taken c. 1940-42 when de Gaulle was in London leading the French resistance during World War II. De Gaulle is famous for his statement, "L'état c'est moi" (I am the state).

Diaz, Porfirio (1830-1915) Mexican dictator for 35 years; overthrown by Francisco Madero in 1911 and died in exile. A beautiful, ornate, partly-printed Document Signed as President, Mexico City, May 2, 1885, two pages elephant folio. Being a promotion to Major for Abelardo Avalos, 1st Captain of the Staff Officers of the Engineering Faculty. A vignette of the eagle with the snake covers much of the top third of the document. A white and gray seal is at top left and there are six revenue stamps across the top edge. Diaz' signature is quite large. The document is open so that the back page is visible with its notations. Some light edge toning, but still the nicest Diaz document we have seen. Matted to an overall size of 23 x 28 ½ inches.

Gandhi, Indira (1917-1984) Indian prime minister; assassinated. Typed Letter Signed as Prime Minister, on letterhead with "Prime Minister's House New Delhi," November 27, 1966, 1p, quarto. To United Nations Secretary General U Thant in New York. "How thoughtful of you to write to me about Shrimati Subbulakshmi's concert. I am glad the concert was a success and that her performance added to the appreciation of Indian music in the United States. / I was interested to see your United Nations Day speech…." One tiny stained spot at left edge, else fine. A warm letter with a terrific association.

(Guevara, Ernesto "Che") Photograph Album (1928-1967) A notebook of 38 photographs, each in an individual sleeve, of Che Guevara, taken c. 1959-early 1960s. Many are marked on the back for use in Cuban newspapers. There are several shots of Che in his famous beret; he is also shown involved in various activities, such as speaking to foreign leaders and groups of people, in the jungle, playing baseball, golf and chess, etc. There is also a photo of Che after he was shot in Bolivia in 1967. A recent movie, The Motorcycle Diaries, is based on a trip Che took through South America as a young man in 1951 with his friend Alberto Granado. There are an additional 15 photos of incidental people and places in Havana in the album. The photos vary in size and range from good to fine.

In part: "I have received…your letter…regarding the 40th year of the State of Israel as the 'Year of Unity of the Nation'….I shall …try…to minimize the divisions and heal the controversies in Israel. I regret that I cannot intervene actually in the politics, and I have no intention to try and change their structure….I share your hope that in the 40th year of the State of Israel there will be a spirit of tolerance and constraint, and I shall try…to contribute to this." With transmittal envelope and translation. File holes in right margin.

Kai-shek, Madame Chiang (1897-2003) Powerful wife of the president of Nationalist China; the second woman and first Chinese to address the U.S. Congress (1943). Typed Letter Signed "Mayling Soong Chiang" on stationery headed "Office of the President / China," Taipei, Taiwan, March 24, 1955, 1p, quarto. To former U.S. Postmaster General James A. Farley, consoling him on the death of Mrs. Farley. In part: "…The separation through death…is only temporary….I hope…that you will take comfort in knowing that she is free from suffering and that her spirit is never far from you…." An extremely rare letter with unusual content. Madam Chiang graduated from Wellesley College; her linguistic skills and political acumen were important to the promulgation of the Chinese Nationalist cause. Show through from glue remnants on verso, affecting "Chiang" in the signature.

Mussolini, Benito. Typed Document Signed ("Mussolini") as Minister of War, Rome, October 12, 1935, 1 pg, 14 x 9 in. On Ministry of War letterhead with a large royal coat of arms watermark, to King Vittorio Emmanuel III, asking the King to approve the reinstatement of Bizzarri Cesare, a medical captain who had been suspended, then acquitted, of procuring nine abortions for his own servant. Light toning, tiny binding holes with minor rust stains at left margin, else Very Good. With a photo postcard of Mussolini. The King was a mere figurehead; Mussolini was dictator of Italy, as indicated by the "XIII" after the date, referring to the 13th year since he and his Fascists took power in 1922.

Rabin, Yitzak (1922-1955) Israeli soldier, statesman and Prime Minister (1974-1977 and 1992-1995); assassinated in 1995. Typed Letter Signed as Minister of Defense, in Hebrew, Hakiryah, 9 Sivan, May 29, 1985, one page, quarto. To Tuvia Friedman at The Institute of Documentation in Haifa, in response to an inquiry about the chief cantor in the army. In part: "…I requested the comments of the Army's chief Rabbi and I quote part of his reply: The army's Chief Chazan told me that he had indeed met Mr. Cherney, but according to him he had not spoken to him about receiving a job of Chazan in the U.S….all his talks with Mr. Cherney concerned only Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, at which occasions the Army's Chief Chazan has been praying in the U.S. or Canada for many years. From his words it is clear that his mention of funerals is only an expression of his hard feelings during a funeral, and is no indication of his wish to resign from his position…." With translation. File notation; staple and punch holes, else Very Good.

Rabin"), eight 4 x 7 in. color photos and one 5 x 7 in. black and white photo. Five are with President Bill Clinton, one with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, one with Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat, one with Teddy Kollek, and two others in Washington, D.C. All fine.

With a letter of authenticity from Tuviah Friedman of the Institute of Documentation in Israel stating that the photo was signed personally for him.

Smuts, Jan Christian (1870-1950) South African statesman and soldier; twice prime minister of South Africa (1919-24 and 1939-48). He was the only person to sign the peace treaties ending both world wars. Photograph Signed as Prime Minister, n.p., n.d., 8 x 5¾ inches. The photo has a London photographer's stamp on the verso; it is probably war date. Smuts worked closely with Winston Churchill during World War II and attained the rank of Field Marshall. Light scratch marks, else very good.

Trotsky, Leon (1879-1940) Russian communist leader. Autograph Document Signed, headed "Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, 7th Army, Headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division," February 11, 1919, 1 p, 4½ x 7 in. In Cyrillic script, addressed "To the commandant of the train, Chairman of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic," ordering him to issue to the bearer, Division Commandant comrade Polyakov, 200 rifles of the dragoon pattern, 50 sabres for the officers (of the officers' pattern), 50 sabres of the dragoon pattern, and 20 revolvers for the officers, with holsters and belts. Countersigned by Division Commander Ivanov, Military Commissar K. Samtsov and Asst. Chief of Staff Yakovlev. Trotsky was second in command after Lenin; he managed the founding of the Red Army. After Lenin died in 1924 and Stalin took over, Trotsky was exiled; in 1937 he found refuge in Mexico but was assassinated by the long arm of Stalin in 1940.
