Commager, Henry Steele (1902-1998) Historian and author; he co-authored The Growth of the American Republic, the most respected American history survey of its time. Typed Letter Signed on Columbia University letterhead, Amherst, Mass., March 8, 1957, 1 p. octavo, thanking an admirer from Iowa. With a 4 x 6 inch snapshot signed; some creasing to photo.

Valentine, D.T. Historian who compiled the series: "Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York," (best known as "Valentine's Manuals") from the mid 1840s to the early 1860s. Front Flyleaf from a manual Signed and Inscibed, "Presented to Col J. Vanderbilt with the respects of the compiler. June 1849. D.T. Valentine," 7¼ x 4½ in. A scarce autograph. Page is partially dampstained and is soiled on verso. With 6 x 3¾ in. engraving of Valentine.

Byrd, Richard E (1888-1957) U.S. admiral; Arctic explorer. Typed Letter Signed "R E Byrd" on paper with typed heading: "Byrd Arctic Expedition," Washington, D.C., April 4, 1926. To G.F. Jowett, the "Arnold" of his day, thanking him for the 200 pound set of barbells. "We…know it will be useful in keeping the members of the expedition fit…." A month later Byrd flew over the North Pole; in 1928-1930, he would lead the first expedition to Antarctica. Toned, with a few edge chips. Attached is a vintage newspaper clipping of one of the members of the expedition lifting the barbell.

Halliburton, Richard (1900-1939) Explorer and author; lost at sea at age 39. Autograph Letter Signed, n.p., n.d. (1935), 1p, quarto. Responding to a young boy, Edgar Mayfield, who asks for a personal letter and photo and shrunken skulls for his school's museum. Halliburton replies, "…I promise to send you my next collection of skulls…." A charming letter. Toning and crease down right edge, affecting nothing. A carbon copy of the boy's letter is included.
