Lincoln Carte de Visite From A Brady Negative. Full-length, seated portrait of Lincoln, turned to his left, 4 x 2½ in. Imprint of E & H.T. Anthony, New York, on verso, "From Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery." Alexander Gardner took the photograph for Matthew Brady; Anthony received some of Brady's negatives in payment for photographic supplies. Mount is slightly trimmed at corners, some toning, and a few stray marks; otherwise, in good condition.

(Lincoln, Abraham) Cabinet Photo of His Home In Springfield, Illinois. Cabinet-size, albumen print, 4 x 6¾ in., laid to larger board, c. 1889, with imprint of O.H. Oldroyd, state custodian, on verso. A note on the verso by the original owner says, "Visited this place in May 1889." Some toning and foxing. Notations on mount, above and below photo. This house, which was built in 1839, was only a story and a half when the Lincolns purchased it in May of 1844. Between 1844 and 1861, the years the Lincolns lived there, the home underwent several additions, the last being in 1856 when the second story was added. The elm tree in the front yard was planted by Lincoln.

Military dispatch announcing the death of President Abraham Lincoln, from "Headquarters 1st Div. 17th A.C., Raleigh N.C., April 17, 1865," 1p. quarto. In full: "The following despatch has been received by Maj. Genl. Blair. 'General' Our noble President has been assassinated and is dead. Seward also, and his son: it is thought Seward will live but his son cannot. The assassins are said to have attempted Grant but failed. They are reported on the track of Sherman, and the Secretary puts him on his Guard. My heart is filled with gloom and sorrow. We have lost our noble head. (signed) O.O. Howard, Maj. Genl. By order of Brig Genl M.F. Force.…" Signed by "James R. Adams, Capt. & a.a.a.h." Docketed on verso. Binding remnants at left edge, else fine.

(Lincoln, Abraham) The Gettysburg Address. Complete issue of the New-York Daily Tribune, November 20, 1863, 8pp, 21 x 15½ in., containing an early comprehensive account of the Consecration Ceremonies at Gettysburg Cemetery. Two columns on the front page and almost the entire second page describe the event in detail, including President Lincoln's legendary speech, which was interrupted five times with applause, and the entire text of orator Edward Everett's address. On the evening of his arrival, the President was serenaded by the band of the 5th NY Artillery. He thanked the cheering crowd and made some humorous comments, among which: "…In my position it is somewhat important that I should not say any foolish things. It very often happen that the only way to help it is to say nothing at all. Believing that is my present condition this evening, I must beg of you to excuse me from addressing you further." He retired amid loud cheering. Small notches at left edge from binder removal; otherwise fine. Handsomely preserved in a custom-made black and burgundy folio, 22 x 16¾ in., with gilt lettering. An exceptional issue, rich in historical content.

(Lincoln, Abraham) Morning and Evening Editions of the New-York Tribune, April 15, 1865. Both papers have black mourning borders. The morning edition, which has 12 pages, carries a 2½ column story on page 3 headed: "HIGHLY IMPORT! The President Shot!" and gives in order 11 dispatches which the paper received about the attack on President Lincoln and Secretary of State Seward. At that time it was not known if the President were still alive. The 4-page has front-page news of Lincoln's death: "DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT" with the text of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's announcement to Major-General Dix: "Abraham Lincoln died this morning at twenty-two minutes after 7 o'clock." The paper includes a moment by moment account of the President's condition (pulse, respiration, etc.) from 11 P.M. on April 14th until his death at 7:22 A.M. on the 15th. There is also a mistaken report of John Wilkes Booth's capture, details of the attack on Seward, public sentiment on the assassination, a report on the inauguration of Andrew Johnson, and more. The morning edition is fine; the evening edition is moderately foxed, with some darker toning at the folds and margins. Housed in a custom-made holder of black buckram with burgundy spine; the name of the paper, the date, and "Assassination of Abraham Lincoln" are in gilt lettering.

(Lincoln, Abraham) Nomination For the Presidency. Historical newspaper, Moore's Rural New Yorker, "For the Week Ending Saturday, May 26, 1860," Rochester, New York, 8pp, 19¼ x 13½ in. A splendid account of Abraham Lincoln's nomination at the National Republican Convention, held in Chicago, May 16, 1860. After receiving 102 votes on the first ballot, then 181 on the second, "…the final ballot, was taken, when Abram Lincoln, of Illinois, received 231½ votes, or within 1½ of the nomination. Mr. Andrews of Mass. rose and corrected Massachusetts, by changing four votes, and giving them to Lincoln, thus nominating Lincoln by 2½ majority." Other states followed, bringing Lincoln's total to 354, and "the nomination was declared unanimous." Scattered foxing, else very good.

He writes: "I was critical of the pardon at the time and publicly stated that in my opinion former President Nixon should have been forced to stand trial before a jury like anyone else indicted by a grand jury. Today, I am more doubtful."

Also, a booklet on the dedication celebration of the Nixon Library and an invitation to attend the ground breaking, reception and dinner celebration of the library, as well as a McCall's magazine story on Pat Nixon in October 1973, Newsweek's account of Nixon's funeral, and a newspaper account from Thousand Oaks, California. (Nixon, Richard) Souvenir Briefcase From His China Trip. Souvenir briefcase from President Richard Nixon's historic trip to China in 1972. Leather, 13 x 17 in., engraved with a gold Presidential Seal and "President Nixon's Trip Peoples Republic of China February 1972." A label from the Kandara Palace Hotel is attached; the label has some chipping. From the collection of journalist Bob Considine. During February 21-28, 1972, President Nixon spent an extraordinary week in the People's Republic of China (PRC), where he met with Chairman Mao Tse-tung and Premier Chou En-Lai. Nixon was the first President to visit China and the first to visit a nation with which the United States had no formal diplomatic relations.

A Book for Fifty Million People. Illustrated by H.J. Kintz, 1885 (cover toning and chipping), and a 7 x 9 in. print, "Inauguration Ball" with busts of Cleveland and T. A. Hendricks, his Vice President. The Franklin D. Roosevelt ephemera includes a Typed Letter Signed "FDR" on White House letterhead, December 3, 1944, to Col Edwin A. Halsey, Secretary of the U.S. Senate, saying: "If the record shows that I was prayed over the last Inauguration twice, the record must be right. I have no recollection of the occasion. It is all right to ask Bishop Dun and Dr. Ryan." Also: a Limited De Luxe Edition, No. 534, of the Roosevelt-Wallace Official Program (1941); printed invitations to the 1937 inauguration of FDR and John N. (Roosevelt, Franklin D.) James Montgomery Flagg Campaign Poster. Poster created by famed illustrator James Montgomery Flagg in support of the 1944 reelection of FDR. Flagg uses the popular image of Uncle Sam, pointing at Roosevelt and saying, "I Want You F.D.R." The 21½ x 16½ in. poster was commissioned by the Independent Voters' Committee of the Arts and Sciences for Roosevelt. It was designed with a strip of adhesive along the top and bottom, allowing it to be affixed to a store window, facing out; this example was never used so the adhesive is intact. The poster has flawless colors and is in excellent condition.

(Washington, George) The Newport Herald, Newport, May 7, 1789. 4 pp., 17 x 10½ in. Over 2½ columns on pages 1 and 2 narrate the first inauguration of George Washington on April 30, 1789, in New York City. The oath of office was administered on the balcony of the Senate chamber at Federal Hall by R.R. Livingston, Chancellor of the State of New York. The new President then retired to the Senate Chamber and gave a speech, the entire text of which is printed, before a joint session of the two Houses of Congress. A religious service at the Episcopal Church followed. Various celebrations, including fireworks, followed in the evening. Page 2 also holds the address of the citizens of Alexandria, Virginia, to Washington on April 16th, and his reply, as well as a description of the honors accorded Washington at Trenton, New Jersey. Page 1 gives information on the 11 states of the Union; Rhode Island and North Carolina are referred to as "Foreign States" because they did not become states until May 29, 1790 and November 21, 1789 respectively. Housed in a custom-made holder of black buckram with burgundy spine; the name of the paper, the date, and "Inauguration of George Washington" are in gilt lettering.
