1922-S $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-63 PQ. A better date issue in a very appealing condition. Once thought to be a seriously rare date, hoards from Europe and Central America have changed the population composition in mint state. Regardless, the '22-S in choice uncirculated is not "common" and examples such as this deserve a significant premium over the most frequently seen dates. An extremely lustrous and frosty example unusually found on "stock" MS-63 coins.
Estimated Value $2,700 - 3,000.

1922-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. A frosty specimen with ample luster and eye appeal. Slight streaks of lavender toning just below branch. A tiny magenta spot at tip of ray above Capitol. There are several small ticks on the obverse and reverse, most noticeably a horizontal tick below the foot in rock, but none are of the degree normally seen on MS-62 pieces. PCGS has graded 243 in MS-63, 124 in MS-64, 6 in MS-65 and a single MS-66 as the finest (PCGS # 9174) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,400.

A well struck piece and only the stars directly under the lower portion of the gown display any weakness. Rare 1924-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Light golden coloration with rose and olive highlights. A few lights spots of film on the obverse near the central device. The central portion of this coin is well struck but the lower obverse at 6:00 shows weakness, a characteristic that David Akers described resulted from die deterioration. The fields have no evidence of wipe or mishandling and the entire appearance of the coin is that of a higher grade. There is one diagonal nick in the center of Liberty just above her left knee. PCGS has graded 110 in MS-63, 124 in MS64, 3 in MS-65 and 1 in MS-66 (PCGS # 9178) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

1924-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-62. Beautiful coloration, deep golden and swirling with luster. For an issue that is often plagued with weakness due to die deterioration, one will note that aside from the nose, peripheral detail is still quite sharp. Two scratches in the field are the grade determining factor because eye appeal is much finer than that of MS-62. Another fine example of a tough date from a challenging period for U.S. gold coinage.
Estimated Value $3,400 - 3,600.

1924-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Satiny luster with greenish gold and rich yellow gold coloration. Lustrous with no hairlines in the fields. Well struck with LIBERTY strong. A small vertical tick mark on Liberty's left arm towards shoulder. No deep or distracting nicks or hits on Liberty's legs. The 1924-S is very similar to the 1924-D in terms of overall rarity and rarity in the gem category. The major difference between the two issues is that the 1924-S is scarcer in MS-64 than the 1924-D. A mintage of 2,927,500 coins from San Francisco this year. David Akers noted that this date was considered one of the rarest from the entire Saint Gaudens series until several hoards appeared in the 1950's and 1960's. A tough issue to locate in choice MS-63 and this fresh and appealing piece is sure to bring top dollar. PCGS has graded 129 in MS-63, 57 in MS-64, 2 in MS-65 and a single MS-67 as the finest known (PCGS # 9179) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.
