U.S. Gold $20 St. Gaudens 1907-1914

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2586
1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief. NGC graded Proof 64 PQ. A stunning example of America's most beautiful design in the ultimate proof condition! A specimen exceedingly close to gem condition with an original oily-gold sheen mixed with gorgeous straw-yellow coloration. The high relief nature of this design is so spectacular in this state of preservation that it is hard to put the coin down during viewing, the eye's naturally being drawn to the beauty. While the obverse displays some light hairlines, this is the only evidence of human intervention on this pinnacle of American, and worldwide, numismatic design. In fact, the raised die polish lines are so bold that the hairlines almost disappear when viewed with only 3x magnification. All surfaces shift with an intact skin of mint frost. A coin that will forever stand as one of the finest designs for numismatics throughout modern and ancient history! This fresh proof Saint Gaudens' double eagle last saw the numismatic marketplace as Lot # 2198 of the Superior Sale of the 1872 Amazonian Gold Pattern Set in October of 1990 where it brought $34,100. Today it is still housed in the same old NGC holder with the lot tag still on the back. NGC population of 51 in this grade with 37 finer.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.
Ex-Superior, October 7-9, 1990, Lot # 2198.

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, wire rim. EF-40. A pleasing circulated example of this Classic U.S. coin. An old light cleaning left hairlines in the fields that have retoned with some faint rose toning. Mark free on most of Liberty's legs except for one small tick on Liberty's left leg. The eagle's left wing has an old curved scratch at the upper portion. Pleasant "as-is" and very collectible in this grade.

1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, Roman numerals, flat rim. PCGS graded MS-63. Beautiful yellow golden surfaces with completely intact skin and luster. Delicate die swirls at the tips of the sun rays on both obverse and reverse. A tiny horizontal tick mark on the upper thigh of Liberty's right leg. The eagle is completely untouched and pristine. The reverse quality of this piece is close to gem condition while the obverse has a faint hairline scuff from the border to just underneath the L of LIBERTY. The overall eye appeal of this coin is very "PQ" and we are sure heavy bidding will follow this example. The flat edge variety of Augustus Saint Gaudens famous design is significantly more rare the wire edge and regularly receives a premium in the numismatic marketplace. PGCS has graded 98 in MS-63 with a total of 84 finer. (PCGS # 9136) .
Estimated Value $17,000 - 18,000.

1908 $20 St. Gaudens. With motto. SEGS graded MS-63. While the mintage of this With Motto double eagle was only 156,359, it is only a conditional rarity in grades of MS-64 and above. Akers pointed out that due to the addition of the motto "In God We Trust" on the reverse, the dies had to be strengthened, leading to the typical 1908 With Motto issue having a strong strike. Lustrous and possessing strong eye appeal.

1908-D $20 St. Gaudens. With motto. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. An absolutely stunning piece that highlights every characteristic that one would hope to see on this issue. The entire obverse and reverse surfaces are almost entirely flawless except the lightest hairlines found in the obverse fields. Slightly granular surfaces have beautiful rich gold color with hints of rose and olive hues. David Akers, U.S. gold specialist, noted that this issue was considered a seriously underrated coin from this series until a hoard surfaced and made examples in the near-gem and MS-65 grades relatively available. Still, it is quite hard to ever locate a coin with as much eye appeal and originality as the present offering (PCGS # 9148) .

1908-S $20 St. Gaudens. With motto. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. The 1908-S is a rare issue within the Saint Gaudens series and the specimen offered here in its beautiful condition is an enormous rarity! Completely pristine and satiny surfaces with uninterrupted luster. All detail is sharp and this spectacular coin is exceedingly close to the gem category. With a mintage of only 22,000, the 1908-S double eagle is always popular and consistently enjoys strong demand. With choice AU examples bringing near $5000, we are certain this pristine piece will bring intense bidding and top dollar. Identified by a light, horizontal hairline scratch across legs above knees. The grade distribution in mint state is pretty even, with on average less than 20 graded by NGC per grade. In gem condition, the 1908-S is straight up rare! A well struck coin with orange-gold surfaces. Luster is abundant and only a few wispy hairlines exist in the fields. A short tick is found on Liberty's gown. NGC population 31 with 43 finer.

Choice Mint State 1909-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Pleasing frosty surfaces with soft hints of rose toning. Very lustrous and appealing and only scattered small abrasions are found in the fields. There is a patch of raised die swirl lines just around the mintmark. Absolutely no hairlines in the fields and choice for the grade. A hoard that was dispersed made this previously rare date much more available up to the MS63 level. The condition of this piece is significantly finer than the average MS-63 and should be considered rare rather than just scarce. 1910-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. The 1910-S is an issue that is readily available in all grades up to the gem level. Several large hoards of this date have led to the availability in lower mint state grades, but in gem condition, the 1910-S quickly becomes a different type of beast. Survival rates in gem condition are very small and a correctly graded gem is quite a feat to find. The present piece has strong detail, unmarked devices and pleasing lustrous fields. The lightest hint of iridescent toning exists on Liberty's legs. On the reverse, the only mark to note is a diagonal nick in the mid-portion of the eagle's left wing.
