U.S. Liberty Seated Dollars 1860 through Large Lots

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1758
1872 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. The 1872 Seated dollar has the highest mintage from the series, 1,105,500 coins. It is readily available in all grades up to MS-64. Even though the 1872 has the highest mintage, it is actually scarcer than the 1871 in terms of overall rarity. The present example has extremely reflective fields and crisp satiny luster. The eye appeal and quality of this example is far above AU55 and viewers should look closely at this coin. Liberty, the eagle, the motto and all lettering is frosty and bold. A short hairline scratch runs upwards from just right of star 1. There is scuff mark on Liberty's left and right legs. For the money, this cataloguer feels this would be a fantastic example to put away as a type example of a With Motto Seated dollar. The correct grade of this piece should probably be considered Brilliant Uncirculated. Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder (PCGS # 6968) .
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

Lot 1759
1872-CC Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. A memorable example of this scarce Carson City Seated dollar. Antique gray surfaces are enhanced by the slight reflectivity of the fields and the pleasing iridescent peripheral toning. A remarkably mark-free specimen with only faint hairlines in the fields. A raised die dot right of star 2. A small circular mint made planchet impression is seen in the right field left of star 13. The reverse possesses above average satiny luster. A single soft hit in the horizontal stripes of the shield is the only mark worth mentioning on the eagle. This 1872-CC dollar is very choice for the grade and should be considered as one of the finer examples to exist since examples rarely achieve grades higher than MS62. While the 1872-CC dollar is more common than the 1871-CC and 1873-CC, it is substantially more rare than the 1870-CC, about twice as rare in terms of the total number of specimens known. Only 3,150 pieces were struck and any uncirculated example is very rare and desirable. When the Eliasberg specimen was sold it was described as a MS61/MS62 prooflike example and noted as "Remarkable Mint State 1872-CC Dollar", we feel this specimen is very close to being just as remarkable. Population of 2 with 1 finer (PCGS # 6969) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 13,000.

1872-S Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded AU-53 PQ. An seriously important coin due to its status as the only collectible San Francisco issued With Motto Seated Liberty dollar! Since most of us cannot realistically expect to acquire an 1870-S and an 1873-S is out of the question, we are left with the 1872-S as our only option. Out of the 9,000 coins struck in 1872 at San Francisco, survivors are rare in AU and mint state. Only a handful of uncirculated examples exist, none at the gem level and a choice AU example is the best value with regards to price point at today's levels.

The present example is untoned, white and lustrous. Rich and satiny luster surrounds Liberty and the only seriously noticeable mark is a scratch right of stars 5 and 6. The strike is strong and even all the stars display full detail. While housed in a PCGS AU-53 holder, this specimen should easily be considered a choice AU and seriously pursued as such. A great opportunity to get a pleasing and undervalued significant type coin! PCGS has graded 7 in AU-53 with only 18 finer (PCGS # 6970) .
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,200.

1873 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. Brilliant and bright white with loads of eye appeal. Several small raised dots are seen on Liberty's neck and upper chest, most likely a result from the obverse die having developed some rust. Minor hairlines exist in the obverse and reverse fields but these are most noticeable due to the deep reflectivity of the fields. A choice and appealing cameo proof! Only 600 proofs were produced this year. PCGS has graded 9 in PR-63CAM, 12 in PR-64CAM and 1 in PR-65CAM (PCGS # 87021) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1873 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Untoned and boasting superbly frosty and satiny surfaces. A beautiful touch of reflectivity adds even more eye appeal to this undervalued With Motto Seated dollar. There is a short tick mark between stars 3 and 4. A short horizontal planchet impression, mint made, is noted at the upper right of star 7. Another deeper planchet impression, mint made, just below the E of UNITED. Just a pleasing, original and fun coin to look at. Another piece from this fantastic collection that would make a fabulous type example for this series. PCGS has graded 24 in MS-62 with only 43 finer (PCGS # 6971) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Lot 1764
Rare 1873-CC Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded EF-45 PQ. Untoned and semi-reflective fields enhance the unabraded surfaces of this classic Carson City Seated dollar issue! While some technical friction can be observed on the breasts, arm, legs and head, the quality of this fantastic rarity seems to be several points above XF in our minds. For an issue with a low mintage of only 2,300 and immediate circulation of that entire mintage, we note that this piece is surprisingly free of hard abrasions and scratches. Faint luster is still present, mostly on the reverse. The eagle was spared any hits and still retains some frost in recessed areas. There is a small planchet depression just above the tip of the olive branch below the talon of the eagle's left claw.

The 1873-CC Seated dollar is the rarest issue from the Carson City Mint and some authorities have speculated that aside from the 1870-S, this issue is the rarest Liberty Seated dollar. This issue was struck just prior to issuance of the Trade Dollar and it is unclear whether the entire mintage of 2,300 was distributed or if some were melted. The cataloguer of the Eliasberg Sale stated that "In view of th rarity of the 1873-CC today, it seems reasonable to suggest a net distribution of only 1,000 for these coins". Whatever the case may be, the 1873-CC is a serious rarity to be reckoned with and any collector will need a lot of patience, dedication and a little luck in finding a pleasing example. By handling this amazing collection of Seated Dollars, we are easing that tantalizing task by offering you this superb rarity! Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder. PCGS population of 11 in EF-45 with only 19 finer (PCGS # 6972) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 16,000.
