Lot 1518
1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Small eagle reverse, 13 stars on obverse. PCGS graded Fine-12. An example that definitely got its fair share of circulation. With that said, things could have been worse for this 1798 Small Eagle reverse example as the surfaces are still decent and all major obverse and reverse detail is visible. We note an old, deep contact mark just below LI of LIBERTY. About the only characteristics not in line with honest, old wear are several rim bruises that show up heaviest on the reverse (PCGS # 6867) .

1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Heraldic eagle reverse. . Bolender-10, Rarity-4. NTC graded EF-40. Our grade sharpness of VF, cleaned and retoned. A scarcer die marriage, identified by several easily discernible diagnostics. First, a die crack runs from the right portion of L up towards the dentilation. Secondly, a small die lump exists between the last star and the bust and there is a small spur on the 9 in the date. The upper two berries on the reverse are very small and appear as though they have no stems.

1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Heraldic eagle reverse. . Bolender-23, Rarity-3. NTC graded Fine-15. Our grade is VG-8. Dramatic doubling from being double struck! The obverse shows the heaviest doubling at the date and in the lettering. The 8 of the date has a "chainlink" appearance. The portrait of Liberty also shows light doubling in the field. Doubling on the reverse is a tad fainter and confined to some dentilation and the right wing of the eagle. Old cleaning with some light bruises around the rims. A minor circular planchet flaw is seen left of the date.
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

Lot 1526
1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Heraldic eagle reverse, close date. . Bolender-27, BB-113, Rarity-2. NGC graded AU-58. A lustrous, sharp and soft gray example with a delicate patina. The obverse has russet hues embedded in the recessed areas and surrounding Liberty. The surfaces have light hairlines and three scratches exist just left of star 8 in the field. The reverse is a more uniform silver color with metal flow lines still visible in the periphery. This is a very choice early Draped Bust dollar and much finer than many seen in the AU58 class. All detail is bold from a sharp impression of the dies and a delicate, radiating luster shifts across the surfaces and is quite pleasing. For this variety, BB-113, NGC has graded only 2 in AU-58, 1 in MS-61, 1 in MS-62 and 1 in MS-64.
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Lot 1527
1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Heraldic eagle reverse, close date. . B-31a, BB-115, Rarity-5. ICG graded VF-30. While not in the Condition Census, this is a very pleasing example of a variety once thought to be Rarity-7 by Bolender. Dark golden-gray surfaces are uniform in color. While there is not much luster to mention, the abrasion free status of the surfaces are a refreshing characteristic. The forehead curl detail is sharp, as is the feather detail on the reverse. Struck a tad off-center and there is an angular rim defect just above and touching the E of STATES. Identified immediately by the shield shaped die crack below the date and extending outwards and upwards. To be in the Condition Census, a coin must be in the choice EF range but we are sure this solid example will receive healthy bidding by those searching for this tough variety.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,800.

1798 Draped Bust Dollar. Heraldic eagle reverse, wide date, 13 arrows. . BB-124. Sharpness of AU-55. Obverse graffiti. Soft gray surfaces with superb luster and a high level of eye appeal. Unfortunately someone put some intentional scratches on the obverse of what would otherwise be a very solid AU55+ coin. The reverse has heavy adjustment marks in the clouds, an area that normally displays strike weakness on this issue/variety. A very nice and flashy AU example with some unfortunate marks. Bid accordingly.
