U.S. Half Dollars - Barber through Franklin

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1293
1892 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A well struck and almost completely white gem. A touch of golden toning in the obverse periphery accents this beauty. The surfaces are microgranular to satiny with sparkling metal flow lines. A few stray and faint hairlines are found on the cheek. Reverse quality is pristine with not a single hairline or mark to mention. Only a fraction of the original mintage of 900,000 have survived in a gem condition as pleasing as the present offering. PCGS population of 71 in MS-65, 32 in MS-66, 8 in MS-67 and 1 in MS-68 as finest (PCGS # 6461) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,500.

1914 Barber Half Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. Deeply reflective and brilliant. Intense metal flow lines seen on both obverse and reverse underneath blazing radial luster. Lot 1299
1917-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. Mint mark on reverse. PCGS graded MS-64. A magnificent example that displays exceptional sharpness combined with blast white and satiny surfaces. An issue that can come with weakness, it is refreshing to see a '17-D Reverse with as much detail as the present offering. The definition of Liberty's outstretched hand is full, as is the breast definition of the eagle. Liberty's head, often an area with notable weakness, is above average in definition. In fact, were it not for a scuff on the sun, a minor tick on the leg and light obverse hairlines, this beauty would be a strong candidate for the gem level. Of the two varieties issued this year, the Obverse and Reverse mint mark, the Reverse mint mark is substantially scarcer. Generally speaking, the 1917-D Reverse mint mark variety is about twice as rare in overall rarity and twice as rare at each respective grade level from MS-60 to MS-65. A choice and strongly appealing 20th century rarity! (PCGS # 6571) .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,200.

1918-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. A difficult early issue from the Walker series, this near-gem example with immaculate surfaces that are white and satiny throughout. Heavily lustrous with a few minor abrasions confined to Liberty's leg and the sun. A fine die crack is noted leaving the lower portion of the left upright of H and heading towards the strongly impressed mintmark. A lovely example of this 20th Century rarity and in our opinion quite choice for the assigned grade (PCGS # 6575) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000.

1919-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded AU-53. A near choice AU example of this key date Walker. While the surfaces do display light hairlines, the lack of marks and the presence of light golden toning make this example seem conservatively graded. Key date Walkers have seen a steady increase in price at all grade levels but there is still plenty of momentum left for appealing circulated examples, for this is where most collectors try to acquire the "keys". Pop 10.
