Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1180
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. . O-104. NGC graded VF-30. Antique gray surfaces with faint blue iridescence at the peripheries. A striking flaw exists near the chin of Liberty in the form of a depression. Original surfaces free from any scratches or heavy abrasions. Centered almost perfectly with strong dentils and no rim bruises. Two leaves underneath each of the eagle's wings. A fantastic candidate for a type coin of this design. A scarcer variety and quickly identified by a small die lump just below star 15. NGC population of 2 with none higher (keep in mind that there are O-104 examples in holders without the variety designation and thus make the population reports inaccurate with regards to varieties).
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,100.

1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. PCGS graded Fine-12. A very solid circulated example of an interesting Flowing Hair half dollar variety. Immediately identifiable by the die break lump between the 5 and star 15. Additionally, amongst stars 12-15 are more wavy raised die lumps. On the reverse, one notices the undertype of E underneath the A of STATES. This is a result of the word STATES being incorrectly cut into the die at first as the word STETES. Clean antique gray surfaces that possess hairlines but lack any long scratches or nicks. On the reverse, there are a few adjustment marks at the lower portion of the eagle's body. Housed in an old PCGS green label holder (PCGS # 6052) .

1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. A bold striking of a scarcer variety Capped Bust half dollar. Only stars 1-3 are flat and the definition of the hair is outstanding. Border detail is above average for this variety, often seen with very little border detail. A specimen as defined as the present piece clearly showcases the raised die lines that are found near the lowest curl on the neck. This is a late die state example. On the reverse, there is a smooth area in the lower part of the eagle's right wing, a result of a sinking die. Several heavy clashmarks are visible as well, the most notable the presence of several letters from the word LIBERTY just beneath the eagle's left wing. A choice example of this fascinating variety! 1832 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Large letters. PCGS graded AU-58 Struck Thru Reverse Before Strike. Often times, this type of error is seen with the strike thru occurring during the striking of the obverse and reverse dies. This example had the strike thru occur at the time the actual planchet was produced. Therefore, the impression itself is a little more dull in appearance while the actual die detail over the impression is full. If the strike thru had occurred during the production of the actual coin, the foreign object would have "erased" the detail in the corresponding area of the coin design. A white and original example with lots of eye appeal in addition to its intriguing error status (PCGS # 6161) .

Important Gem 1837 Reeded Edge Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. A striking gem example of this popular two year type issue. The production of reeded edge half dollars began in 1836 when the steam coining press was introduced at the Philadelphia Mint. While only 1,200 coins were produced in 1836, production increased dramatically in 1837 with approximately 3.6 million coins being produced. The significance of this issue as a two year type coin derives from the reeded edge and the denomination on the reverse denoted by "50c". Starting in 1838, the denomination was denoted as "Half Dol." Golden and gun metal blue toning grace this lustrous gem. A few trivial marks on the chin are easily located with a 3x loupe. The reverse has the die crack seen around the left rim and into the denomination. NGC population of 34 in MS-65, 12 in MS-66 and 1 in MS-66 "Star".
