U.S. Dimes - Bust through Barber

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1067
1814. Large Date. JR-3, Rarity-2. PCGS graded MS-64. One of the nicest early Capped Bust dimes we have handled in quite some time. Aged silver surfaces have gorgeous rainbow toning in swirling patterns on the obverse. The reverse has tints of steel-blue and iridescent rust orange toning. A finely granular frost covers the fields and the devices. Stars 1-7 are fully struck up while stars 8-13 are a little weak. Some strike weakness is also noted on Liberty's curls furthest to the right, the right side of the neck of the eagle and the tip of the eagle's left wing. The strike weakness is minor and for the most part this example was well struck as evidenced by the clashmarks near stars 5-7 depicting the leaves from the reverse. A fine die crack exists from the lower portion of the beak to the central shield. Another fine die crack starts just left of 10 and continues to the middle of the shield, meeting with the aforementioned die crack. Early Capped Bust dimes just never look this nice and original. While PCGS has graded this coin MS64 and the strike weakness could be a reason to technically not grade this specimen gem, the eye appeal is unquestionably gem! PCGS population of 19 in MS64, 4 in MS65 and a single MS66 as finest

Please note that the present example is housed in a PCGS Small Date holder. This is incorrect, the coin at hand is a Large Date example, more specifically a JR-3. This variety is identified by the larger date, the center dot on the neck, the beginning of the scroll under the left serif of D and the absence of a dot after 10c (PCGS # 4489) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
Ex-Garrett Collection.

Lot 1068
1821 Capped Bust Dime. Small date. . JR-9, Rarity-2. NGC graded MS-64. With a mintage for the date of 1,186,512, certain Large Date and Small Date examples can be found with relative ease. With regards to total populations of Large and Small Date issues, PCGS and NGC on average have graded about 1/10 the number of Small Dates as they have Large Dates. Therefore, this type is going to be a bit more of a challenge. The Small Date type is quickly discernible from the Large Date type, the date appearing to hug the dentilation at 6:00 and the three known Small Date die marriages are each fairly common (JR-10 being the scarcest). This is all great until you need to find a choice and original near-gem example. With wholly white and lustrous surfaces, the present Capped Bust Dime is quite rare. The strike is sharp and hair detail is complete, each strand and curl fully brought up. Wing and claw detail on the reverse should be applauded as well. Only very minor hairlines are keeping this example from the gem level. For this variety, this is the second finest example graded at NGC, a single MS-65 the finest attributed example for the JR-9 variety.
Estimated Value $3,200 - 3,500.

Both the obverse and reverse have a gorgeous light golden toning, heavier on the reverse. There are two small horizontal ticks left of star 13 in field. Another scratch runs across the knee of Liberty. The With Stars Seated Liberty dimes are quite scarce and in the near-gem and gem conditions, undervalued. Lot 1075
1857 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. The 1857 dime is a Rarity-6 issue as a proof and few survive in any condition. The fields on this specimen have a medium intensity to their reflectivity and are covered in light golden toning and iridescence. A small lint mark on the hand of Liberty is an excellent identifier. The device of Liberty is mark free and the entire coin, obverse and reverse, is superbly struck. We feel that this rarity is choice for the grade and conservatively graded by PCGS. Only 70 proofs were struck in 1857 and we are sure bidders will be eager to acquire this seldom seen rarity. PCGS population of 7 in PR-63, 7 in PR-64, 2 in PR-65 and 3 in PR-66 (PCGS # 4746) .

1885 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo. A "top pop" blast white and frosty superb gem! As if it were struck yesterday, the surfaces are shimmering with metal flow lines and unstoppable luster. Strongly Cameo, bordering on Deep Cameo, the contrast between the fields and the devices is awesome. Hard to identify by any scratches or lint marks but a tiny nick on Liberty's upper right shoulder is mentioned simply as a way to track this beauty through the rest of time. The 1 in the date is a little concave, as struck. A blazing gem that represents how the finest gem proof type can look!
