Including two struck pieces: a Semis -- Saturn head right / Prow right (Sear 2000, no. 766); Quadrans -- Hercules head right / Prow right, 3 pellets before (Perhaps Sear 2000, no. 1039). Aes Grave examples: Picenum, Hatria, a Semuncia -- H / AΣ (T-V 187); Etruria, Volaterrae, a Semis(?) -- Janiform head wearing petasos / Club, inscription around (cf. T-V 86, an As). Last, an irregular cast lump, almost resembling an astragalos, c. 5th century BC. (Sear 2000, no. 505). All with a variety of patinas. Close inspection recommended -- some rather nice, some scarce. Lot 699		Roman Imperatorial Period. A Group of "Pompey" Coins. Lot of two Denarii, and one bronze. Gnaeus Pompey Junior, Denarius, 46-45 BC.: Helmeted Roma head right / Spain presenting palm to Pompeian soldier (Craw. 469/1a). Coin on oval flan, and a bit uneven in strike, but still crisp and highly lustrous. Quite nice. Also, two from Sextus Pompey, the Denarius, 42-40 BC.: Head of Pompey Magnus right / Neptune and the Catanaean brothers (Craw. 511/3a); and a bronze As, 43-36 BC.: Janiform head of Pompey Magnus / Prow of ship right (Craw. 479/1). The famed silver tetradrachm of Cleopatra VII, thought to be minted in Antioch (c.37-32 B.C.): Crowned and draped bust of Cleopatra right / Head of Mark Antony right. A decent hole-filler, the metal good, with only modest scattered porosity. Some random ancient scratches. Deeply toned. Also, a Cistophorus of Ephesus, 39 BC.: Jugate busts of Antony and Octavia / Dionysius on Cista Mystica ((RPC 2202). Also Denarii of, Antony & Octavian, Denarius (Sear 2000 1504);Augustus, Capricorn Reverse (RIC 541); Vitellius, Clasped hands (RIC 53, Lugdunum), also Concordia (RIC 66); and Vespasian, Double Capricorn (RIC 63). Lastly a Drachm of Caesarea: Claudius / young Nero. Inspection suggested. Coins with a variety of tones and surfaces. The Augustus portrait exquisite. Lot of 8 coins. Two Denarii: from Tarraco, 68 AD.: Laureate head left on globe / Roma right (Sear 20002095 var); and from Rome, 68-69 AD.: Laureate head right / Livia standing left (RIC 224). And two copper Aes of Rome: Draped bust right / Salus leaning against column right (RIC 501); Head right / Vesta seated left (RIC 375). Inspection suggested. First denarius with reverse marks, the second a bit over cleaned, but toned down. Both bronzes with usual smoothed fields, and perhaps a touch of tooling here and there. Lot 723		Roman Empire. Caracalla, 198-217 AD. AE 43 mm. -- Medallion, of Pergamum, struck c. 214-216 AD. Laureate and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right. Reverse: Cuirassed Caracalla on horse right, had turned to regard attendant behind, at right, image of Asklepios on column; inscription around and below. BMC Mysia p. 154, 321; SNG Cop. --; cf. SNG von Aulock 1414 (smaller flan); Mionnet II 631. Well centered on huge round flan. Some very minor, discreet smoothing. With variegated red, green, and black patina. Large and impressive. Rare. Very Fine. This example is one of a series of large pictorial medallions struck by the city to commemorate Caracalla's visit to the Pergamene temple of Asklepios in 214 AD. Caracalla must have received some relief from his ailments after his visit. He then ordered the reconstruction of the healing god's temple, along with that dedicated to Roma, plus several others, thus heartily endearing himself to the Pergamenes who were moved to strike these commemorative issues.
