1796 Draped Bust Half Dime. LM-1, Rarity-3. NGC graded AU-58. A scarce die variety, but the most readily available of the two varieties known for the date (the other is Rarity-6). Nicely struck from heavily clashed dies, with none of the weakness on the outer borders as seen on the Logan-McCloskey plate coin. Rotated reverse die, approximately 340 degrees off its normal axis. Beautiful, original toning consisting of sea-green, lilac, rose, and slate gray colors, all blended together and covering both sides. A wonderful coin for the type buyer or the advanced variety collector.

1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars. NGC graded Proof 62. Large Date, with the 8 of the date punched wackily into the die three times; the other digits also mis-punched the first time (this die was later used to produce circulation strikes, sometimes in an early state, but later polished to reduce or efface the underlying digits). This is a lovely coin, with glittering Proof surfaces and a delicate layer of purple toning. Both sides show some light hairlines that are well-hidden by the toning and which can only be seen under magnification.

The mintage for this date has been estimated at 20+, a figure which jives with the 11 examples graded by NGC and the 12 examples graded by PCGS (undoubtedly, there is some duplication between the two). As such, this is one of the rarest Proofs in the entire Seated Liberty series and because of the great demand for this date as a separate type, prices are even higher than they might otherwise be. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase what may be one of the most affordable grades for this elusive Proof.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,500.

1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars. AU-55. A honey of a coin, found last year in England, where it had probably been in hiding since the 1840s. Beautiful, original gray and silver surfaces. Just about fully struck and it almost takes imagination to see the faint wear. Try finding another AU this nice!

1854-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded MS-65. Silvery toned on the obverse, with scattered flashes of underlying brilliance peeking through. The reverse is white, fully lustrous, and almost completely free of color. In an old, green-label holder. PCGS reports 8 in this grade, 2 in MS-66, and none finer. Thus, this excellent piece ranks as one of the finest known.

Arrowheads were added to some of the silver coins in 1853 through 1855, to alert the public to a reduction in the weight of the silver in each coin. Another purpose was to make it easy to pick out the old-tenor, heavier weight coins, which could be sold at a premium over their face value.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

1858 Liberty Seated Half Dime. NGC graded Proof 65. Here is a spectacular little gem. A superb example of this rare early proof issue, perhaps 100 were coined and NGC has graded 16 this high with 12 in PF-66 and 1 in PF-67. However, this particular coin boasts frosted devices and well mirrored fields. In the toning department, it is truly beautiful, with deep violet mixing with electric blue iridescence. In an old NGC holder.
