Lot 3182
Hungary. Group of Five Silver Denars of the 13th century, all with Hebrew letters indicating mintmasters' initials. Lot of 5 coins. Condition is Fine to Very Fine.

Whether these are called light-weight denars or obols, the medieval coinage of Hungary offers challenges on all fronts. The relationship of the Jews to rulers who accepted Christianity in AD 975 is under discussion and revision; it may well be that these small coins offer a greater insight than earlier thought.

Spain, Visigothic Kingdom. Sisebut, AD 612-621. Gold Tremissis (1.48g) minted at Toledo. Facing bust of king. Reverse: Facing bust of king. Miles 183a; MEC I, 234. Rare. Extremely Fine.

The royal issues of the Visigoths in Spain lasted for about 130 years. Unlike their counterparts in France, they never put moneyers' names on their coins, only the rulers' names and mintplaces. In AD 612 adherents of the official Catholic religion put Sisebut on the throne; Toledo was the capital. Sisebut began an infamous persecution of the Jews, which was to continue until the end of the kingdom. By AD 713, the Muslims (Moors), coming from North Africa and Arabia, overthrew Visigothic rule.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.

Spain, Castilla and Leon. Pedro I, 1350-1368. Gold Dobla of 35 Maravedis (4.53g) minted at Sevilla. Castle; underneath, "S" mintmark. Reverse: Lion left within double linear arched enclosure. Burgos 369; cf. Heiss I, p. 57,5; Fr-108. A stunning example of 14th century numismatic art. Choice Extremely Fine.

Pedro I, called "the Cruel," directed a number of assassinations against those who would remove him from rule. Partly responsible were his short-term (in days!) alliances with wives, as well as mistresses. After exile, in 1367, Edward the Black Prince sided with Pedro and reinstated him briefly as king. Chief treasurer during his reign was the financial wizard of Jewish background, Samuel Halevi Abulafia. This authority given to Jewish financial experts and mintmasters was quite normal in medieval Spain, and included a three-generation succession of political ministers from the Abravanel family.
