There are a number of Jewish-related coins in the Roman series, most of which refer to the victory of Rome in the Jewish War. The Friedenberg collection has many varieties, most being struck by Vespasian. Specialists need to be watchful, though, of general "Victory" types, and those referring to other wars, creeping into various guidebooks and into their collections. At the time of the Flavians there were extensive military campaigns and subsequent victories in Germany and on the northern frontiers of the empire, as well as in Judaea. This particular coin seems securely attributed to the Jewish War victory with the addition of the palm tree symbolizing Judaea, and yet later (see the beautiful sestertius minted by Trajan in the Friedenberg collection) the shield which Victory is inscribing VIC - DAC [Victory over the Dacians] is also set on a palm.

Lot 3163
Argentina - Tierra del Fuego. Gold 5 Gramos, 1889. Fr-1; KM-Tn2. Denomination over gold pan. Reverse: Gold pan with nuggets; on top, crossed pickaxe and sledge hammer with name "POPPER" on centered tablature. On the obverse, in minuscule letters at the bottom of the gold pan and within the nuggets, are the fineness and weight. This is quite distinct on this variety, actually minted in Buenos Aires. Lustrous, Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. Very rare.

The cataloguer (PFR) has chosen to retain the proper numismatic defining characteristics of an obverse and reverse: that of lower anvil die (obverse, with natural convexity imparted in the striking procedure) and upper hammer die (reverse, with natural concavity). On this Gramo coin, a cruder issue minted on the southerly tip of South America on the island of Tierra del Fuego itself, it is readily apparent to see the opposition of die positions as to the Buenos Aires issues, which were likely struck later.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Argentina - Tierra del Fuego. Gold Gramo, 1889. Fr-2; KM-Tn 1. Gold pan with nuggets; on top, "POPPER" dividing pan. Reverse: Gold pan with nuggets; on top, crossed pickaxe and sledge hammer; fineness and weight in minuscule but ill-defined letters at bottom. Choice Very Fine.

Julius Popper was a Jewish explorer and adventurer, who eventually established a monarchy of sorts on the remote archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, off the coast of Argentina and Chile. Gold was discovered there, and these unusual coins, weighing one and five grams, were struck on the island (cruder issues) and later at Buenos Aires. These are very likely the exact specimens plated in "Jewish Minters and Medalists" (hereafter abbreviated as JMM) by Daniel Friedenberg.

Lot of 3 coins.

Rather than distribute these especially significant coins throughtout the catalogue, it was felt that such an advanced and published collection be presented in a cohesive manner. Therefore, coins of the ancient, medieval and modern world, within a Biblical context, have been listed all together from an historical and geographic perspective.

Our numismatic term "bracteate" comes from the Latin word "bractea," meaning a thin plate of metal. Reverse: Cross on globe (globus cruciger) with star underneath; in field, mintmark "MA"; around, name of minter. JMM p. 8 (the reverse of this coin is illustrated). Very rare. Numerous die breaks, Very Fine.

All Merovingian gold coins are rare. The types and artistry are diverse, as are the different locales of the mints. This particular coin's obverse is imitative of AD 4th-5th century Roman bronzes, while the reverse is reminiscent of tremisses of late 6th century Byzantium. The idea of inscribing the mintplace as well as the moneyer's name on the reverse was continued in France and for even longer in England, until the "New Coinage" of Edward I (introduced in 1279), which omitted the moneyer's name.
