Early Silver Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 801
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 2 leaves beneath each wing. Bolender 1, R.2. NGC graded AU-55. An old friend from over ten years ago, when we (as Superior Galleries) described it thusly: "Magnificent! Fully struck with each minute detail solidly impressed. Perfect warm gray color throughout, seen only on original, uncleaned silver coinage. Furthermore, the surfaces are immaculate save for some faint marks above and near the date. These have all but disappeared under the toning that now graces the piece. The rims are flawless.
This coin approaches Mint State condition and probably never circulated (since the high points reveal only minor cabinet friction and no outright wear). Also, because there are no adjustment marks even the most exacting collectors will aspire to own it. Bolender-1 (unlike the more common Bolender-5) is known for ample hair on Liberty and strong breast feather detail on the eagle. Legions of type, date, and variety collectors will always seek out such a magnificent coin, and with the coin securely in an NGC holder, it will have a ready market whenever the lucky buyer decides to sell. We would certainly place it in the Condition Census for the variety and it is nearly so for the date and type! A foremost opportunity in this fantastic grade and certain to attract considerable bidding activity."

The coin sold for $7,975 in 1993, which means our prediction has come true -- it WILL enter a ready market where the price has advanced dramatically!
Estimated Value $14,000 - 18,000.

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. Silver plug. B-3, BB-11. NGC graded AU-50. 2 leaves reverse. Beautifully toned in lilac-gray, with plenty of untoned areas that reveal the underlying mint luster. Even more important, the silver plug is readily visible on both sides, mostly because the plug has toned to a darker color than the surrounding metal. Magnification reveals a tiny seam around most of the plug on the obverse. However, on the reverse, the seam has been pretty well obliterated by the strike. Apart from being a nice type coin, we point out that this is the finest example of this variety yet graded by NGC.

The purpose of the plug has not yet been determined. Sadly, no mention was ever made in the Mint records. Some experts believe the plug was used to raise the purity of the silver; others believe it was used to raise the weight of the coin. Whatever the purpose, silver plugs have been the object of intense demand and scrutiny. Surprisingly, "plugged dollars" have been with us since 1794, yet they seem to have gone unnoticed until recent years and new discoveries are being made every year. Even so, as far as plugs go, this is the most obvious one we've encountered.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.

1796 Draped Bust Dollar. Small date, large letters. B-4a. PCGS graded AU-55. A fabulous example of this popular type. Boldly struck with lots of detail on what is basically, a problem-free planchet. We do note some faint adjustment marks on the obverse, but these can only be seen under magnification. The surfaces are silvery and mostly untoned. Perfect for the type collector, and the draped bust, small eagle variety is one of the more difficult coins to find in each of the silver denominations. Worth a strong bid from a collector who whats a choice example. Pop of 5 and only 2 better, both AU-58s (PCGS # 6860) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

1859-S Liberty Seated Dollar. NGC graded MS-62 Prooflike. One of the unsung rarities of the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar series, the 1859-S has a low mintage of only 20,000 pieces. Uncirculated examples are very rare and they usually come with satiny, frosty luster. Yet, here we have one that is reflective and brilliant enough to merit a "Prooflike" designation at NGC -- the only time this adjective has ever been applied to a Silver Dollar of this date by NGC! The surfaces are typical of a 62 -- lightly abraded and somewhat baggy, but there is no denying the luster and appealing visual presence of this coin. The color is almost pure white, with rings of golden-brown and olive-blue toning forming near the extreme outer borders. This is a very unusual and desirable format for this date, one that will likely set a record price for the grade. The NGC Census shows 7 in MS-62, 1 in MS-63, and 1 in MS-65.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000.

1865 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Soft white, with milky toning covering both sides of this scarce, Civil War date. The strike is excellent -- every star is sharply detailed, as is the eagle's head and leg feathers. The only mark worthy of note is a shallow srcatch beneath TAT of STATES. PCGS reports 10 examples in this grade, with none finer. Because this example is housed in an older-generation, green-label holder, we suspect it is one of the nicest of those ten (PCGS # 6955) .

1869 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63. Housed in an older-generation, green-label holder and graded before PCGS assigned Cameo designations to coins. This one features heavy cameo contrast that might even qualify at the Deep Cameo level. Both sides are blazing white, with just a hint of milky gold color. The surfaces are generally pleasing and clean, but the right obverse field has a small patch of hairlines. The reverse is decidedly cleaner. Interestingly enough, the reverse is rotated 20 degrees counter-clockwise. A lovely coin that should exceed our estimate range.

1871 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Deep shimmering luster and gorgeous lilac toning that changes to sea-green and blue at the rims on both sides. Wonderful quality for the grade, and a good candidate for resubmission considering it the older-generation, green-label holder in which it is housed. Wonderfully original and choice in every respect. PCGS reports 27 in this grade, 5 in MS-65, and none finer (PCGS # 6966) .
