Original Oil Painting of Bing Crosby's Horse. Original painting by J.N. Slick of Crosby's horse, Okoole Maluna, shown with a jockey on board and wearing the number 6. The painting was done in 1938; it is signed and dated by the artist at lower left. The 24 x 29 inch painting is housed in an ornate 29 x 34 inch frame. There is a small ¾ inch closed tear at the left side of the brown racetrack. Accompanied by a plaque that reads, "Okoole Maluna / By J.N. Slick - 1938 / From the personal collection of Bing Crosby." The plaque is encased in a 9½ 13 inch frame. Crosby (1903-77) was successful as a singer and actor. He also loved to play golf and was a renowned horse-racing fan; he founded the Del Mar racetrack. Very attractive and ready for display.

Crosby, Bing. Bing Crosby's silver money clip, elegantly hand-engraved with his name and surrounded by a deep relief scroll design, also hand-engraved, attached to an 1886 silver dollar. Bing's widow, Kathryn, sold some of Bing's personal effects at auction in May 1982. The clip is held in a small brown velvet bag. A letter of provenance is provided by the person who bought the money clip in the auction and sold it to Raleigh DeGeer Amyx.

Lot 121
Montana, Joe. Red and white jersey with "16" on the front and back and "Montana" on the back. Signed vertically on the number "1" on the back. The size 46 jersey by Wilson was not game worn. Collector Raleigh DeGeer Amyx attended a sports show in the late 1980s and paid to have Montana sign the jersey. Excellent condition.

"Alhambra Saloon" Razor, c. 1845-65. Straight-edge razor, 9½ inches open, with bone or walrus ivory handle engraved "Alhambra Saloon" with two dice on one side and a royal flush on the other side. The blade has a lovely etching of a paddleboat steamer, making one think that the owner made his living as a riverboat gambler. Blade close to handle is engraved, "Wostenholm & Sons / Ebro". A tiny piece of the upper handle is chipped and there are spots of rust on the blade, not touching the etching. Neat!

Razor, c. 19th Century. Razor by W.H. Morley & Sons / Germany, with red stripes and raised stars on a blue background at top and bottom of ivory celluloid handle, and a raised Federal Eagle in flight, with an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The red and blue have faded somewhat with time; still attractive and overall in excellent condition.

Snuff Box, 1861. American, silver and walnut, 2 7/8 inches in length, and 2 1/8 inches wide. Silver plates on top and bottom. On top, the sliding piece over the opening has a wreath with clasped hands within, above a torch; the stationary plate has "James Cervin" at top edge and "Novbr. 26th, 1861." Likely in memory of a loved one, fallen in the Civil War. Very handsome.

Snuff Box, c. 1810-1830. French, 3 inches in diameter and approximately ¾ inch in height. Made of French burwood, with raised battle scene--numerous soldiers with fixed bayonets stand before a man on his knees, his arms around an officer's waist, obviously pleading for his life. In French below, "Le soldat Français meurt et ne se rend pas" (A French soldier dies and doesn't give up). Small dark areas in lid that may be part of wood. Nice workmanship.

Snuff Box, c. 1834. English, 3 inches in diameter and 5/8 inch in height, made from wood from the House of Commons after it burned in 1834. Previously, the House of Commons had met in the chapter house of Westminster Abbey; the fire destroyed the whole palace except the historic Westminster Hall and St. Stephen's Chapel. Probably English oak, well handled with smooth patina. A ¾ inch ivory medallion is inlaid to the cover, engraved "House of Commons Burnt / Octr. 10, 1834.".

Below, in German it says, "Wie die Krähwinkler Eheleute Ihre Kinder gross ziehen," roughly translated as "How the scarecrow couple raises your children." Nice condition.

Snuff Box, c. 1850-70. European. A silver naval officer's cap with an anchor at top front and movable "braid"; the bottom is hinged at center, opening from the back to the center. Length of the brim is 2 3/8 inches; width is 1¾ inches and height is ¾ inch. The silver needs polishing, else very nice condition.

"A Stight Mistake," English, 3½ inches in diameter and approximately ¾ inch in height, ebonized wood with deep yellow and black scene of political satire on the cover: A larger man attacks a smaller man as a larger dog attacks a smaller dog, and a dog, disguised as a woman, lurks behind a fence. The dialogue is, "Vol d'ye set your great dog at my little'um for?" Nice condition.

Snuff Box, Late 19th Century. Made in Vienna, silver and copper, 2½ x 1 5/8 inches. The top slides to the right and has a battlescene engraved in copper, partially raised--two soldiers cross swords as two others watch. A drum, a shield, and various weapons lie on the ground. Engraved on the underside of the lid is "MIT:K.K:PRIV."

Steinway Trophy, 1916. Nineteen-inch sterling silver trophy of graceful design engraved, "To Charles H. Steinway / as a token of affection and esteem / from / The Steinway Dealers / New York / June 22, 1916." Bottom of base is engraved "Black Starr & Frost Sterling / 2054 / 19 In." The handles of the Art Nouveau-style vase extend 2¼ inches above the lip of the vase. A little polish and the vase will be like new. Charles Steinway was one of four sons of Henry Engelhard Steinway, a German immigrant who founded Steinway & Sons in 1853 in a loft on Manhattan's Varick Street. Over the next forty years, Henry and his sons developed the modern piano. In 1867, the company was awarded the prestigious "Grand Gold Medal of Honor" at the Paris Exhibition, the first time an American company had received this award. Steinway became a standard of excellence, and today, Steinway & Sons crafts approximately 5,000 pianos a year worldwide. Weight is 4 pounds, 8½ ounces.
