1852 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. MS-60 Retoned. The color on this one is not right, and we're certain it has been expertly retoned. The coin is well struck and the surfaces look generally clean for the moderate grade assigned.

Lot 851
1852-O Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. MS-60+. Mottled gold and blue toning on both sides, and sharp at the centers, but there is weakness on some of the obverse stars. Examination of the surfaces shows a faint but general roughness and we suspect this coin was cleaned in the past and aside from the roughness, there are hairlines, as well as die lines, but as noted, today sports pretty gold and blue toning. As a date, 1852-O is virtually unobtainable in mint state grades. The price of silver had shot up relative to gold during the 1849 Gold Rush in California, and Congress delayed adjusting the content of silver in coinage until 1853. Hence, all silver was hoarded, melted and sold for a profit, probably to the Mint. By 1852 the situation was desperate, and coinage ground to a halt. It is suspected that most of the production of these early 1850s years was melted, either at the Mint, or turned back to the mint for recoining into the with arrows pieces. Official records indicate 96,000 were struck of 1852-O quarters, but far fewer are found today. PCGS has graded only 21 for instance of the entire date! Of those, a single coin grades mint state, that MS-62. Hence, despite this coins problems, it is very rare indeed, and few collectors can ever even hope to own one. To find a high grade one is nearly impossible. View it before the sale and make your own determination, the rarity is without question, and this one is certainly in very high grade, the hard part, as always, is determining the value, which is what an auction is all about.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.

Lot 852
1853-O Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows and rays. NGC graded MS-61. Deep gray toning on both sides and the fields are a bit baggy and show moderate hairlines. The toning does not look entirely original, although we could be wrong. A rare coin in mint state, as most were spent and very few were saved. NGC reports only a single coin in this grade, with 8 graded higher. If you have been searching for one of these, then take a look and see if this one suits your collection.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1854 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. Arrows. NGC graded MS-64. Greenish gold toning evenly distributed on the obverse, even brighter on the reverse. Reflective fields and frosted devices are the rule, and this coin is an alluring beauty. Sharply impressed by the dies, and a short 2 year type coin with the arrows at date, noting the reduction in the amount of silver and a small increase in the purity that went into effect in 1853. Hard to find this nice, and downright expensive if found any better.
Estimated Value $1,700 - 2,000.

1861 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64. Steel gray with a hint of gold toning over very clean surfaces. This one probably missed being a full gem because of faint hairlines in the delicate mirror fields. Frosty devices, excellent contrast and downright pleasing.

1863 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. Deep bluish to dark gray on the obverse, the reverse lighter with russet colors at the center and steel gray for the balance. Sharp and well preserved, with minor hairlines in the fields from a higher grade. These deeply toned proofs are quite the norm, as silver is supposed to "tone" over time, and 140 years (nearly) is a lot of time.

1863 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. NGC graded Proof 64. A scarce coin in this grade, with 460 coined few are found in near gem grades. This one has delicate gold toning and clean surfaces. Lot 862
1867 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 66. One of the finest seen of this date in Proof. The coining press stopped at 625 pieces for 1867 in proof, many of which were mishandled over the years. PCGS, in their Population Report note only 3 have been graded this high, with none graded higher, making this a candidate for the finest known of the date. Deep gold, blue and gray in color, with pristine fields beneath which show no signs of handling or abuse. Identifiable by a small light toning spot behind the eagle's neck and another in the right wing.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,400.

Lot 863
1867 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 65. While this may not be the highest technical grade, it certainly is one of the most beautiful! Deep blue at the rims quickly fades to russet, lilac and gold on both sides. Philadelphia coined 625 in proof, and this is one of the best, PCGS has graded 15 this high, with just 5 graded higher. If you love deeply toned gems, then put a big circle on this lot number, and bid accordingly.

Lot 867
1876 Liberty Seated Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty gem that is bright and flashy on both the obverse and reverse. We note some trivial handling marks, mostly on the obverse, and a curious die flaw which looks like a rectangular lump below Liberty's left breast. Boldly struck and a lovely example of this centennial year issue. Downright hard to find this nice, and worth a strong bid.
