Standing Liberty Quarters

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 608
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62 Premium Quality. The rarest date of the series, the Philadelphia Mint squeezed off just 52,000 at the tail end of the year and few were saved in Mint State. This is a pleasant white example. The strike is typical with weakness noted on the top of Liberty's head. Decent luster and clean surfaces make this an appealing coin for the grade. In an old green insert PCGS holder.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.

Lot 609
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. SEGS graded MS-61 "Cleaned and Smoothed". The surfaces have been cleaned and smoothed to remove either spots or light marks, and this process has slightly weakened the devices. A few spots still exist on the coin, but they are small and unimportant. A rare and popular date, only a few were coined, and most entered circulation before they could be saved. This one should be inspected by prospective buyers, as it would fit into a date set.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

Lot 610
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded AU-55. A bright and untoned coin that retains some of the satiny luster in the fields. One trivial tick mark located to the left of Liberty on the upper stars, but nothing else worth noting. Typical strike for the date, with Liberty's head not well defined, but sharp at the centers. Rare and always in high demand.

Lot 624
1918/7-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-64 Full Head. Seldom offered, this precious rarity was first noticed by collectors around 1937. At that time, one of the few mint state coins was offered in a Bluestone Auction (12/4/37:741) which realized the astronomical price of $26.25 (Breen). Collectors everywhere began searching through change and carefully examining their Standing Quarter collections. Few have been found, and this popular overdate remains one of the most sought-after coins of the 20th Century. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show about 520 graded in all, not many when one considers how many collectors need one.
Note the frosty luster in the fields, and the coin remains silvery white in color. No signs of toning have formed, and this is a beautiful example of this premier rarity.
Turning to the population, this coin is tied for the finest graded by NGC and PCGS with the full head feature. NGC has graded only 4 this high and PCGS just 6 coins. Fine separation is noted on the three leaves in Liberty's crown, and parts of her ear and a few bosses on the shield are slightly weak. Note the diagnostic clash marks (from the eagle's wing) below TR of TRUST and the microscopic die dot between the right toes on Liberty's foot and the last star, just in the field near the base. These confirm the genuineness of the coin and are diagnostic to this single die pair. A famous rarity that will no doubt bring a strong price from an advanced Standing Liberty Quarter specialist.
Estimated Value $60,000 - 70,000.

Lot 625
1918/7-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. One of the finest graded of this classic rarity, this one has delicate gold toning around the periphery with hints of greens and blues around the eagle and lettering on the reverse. Flashy luster and well struck, with most of the head present, but not quite enough to qualify as full. We must note that this date is nearly impossible to locate with a full head, although a very choice one is offered in this sale. The surfaces remain quite clean, with just a couple of tick marks hidden on Liberty.
This is one of the great rarities of the last century. Few overdates were created, and all are eagerly sought by collectors. Perhaps one thousand of these exist, the grading services have seen just a few over 500 in all grades, and it is likely that more are out there in coin land still sitting in albums, having been put away decades ago. This one has the minute diagnostics noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate feature is plain with a glass. Apparently in the rush to get dies prepared, one 1918 die received a blow from the 1917 master hub, then the hub was switched to the 1918 hub, and the die was struck again. No one noticed the overdate, and the die was shipped and put into production at the San Francisco Mint, much to the delight of collectors.
This is one of the finest graded, NGC has only graded 3 as such, with 2 graded higher, and PCGS has graded 5 as MS-65, and 2 higher. Certainly in the top dozen known and worthy of a strong bid.
Estimated Value $40,000 - 50,000.

Lot 626
1918/7-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. A nice example of this very rare overdate. Fresh mint luster in the fields, and no bagmarks worthy of description. The head has a pretty fair strike for this die, with the 3 leaves visible in Liberty's crown, but weakness behind her eye. PCGS has graded just 62 coins in mint state (of those 9 have full heads) so keep that in mind when formulating a bid. This is a very rare coin in any grade, and the overdate feature is quite clear on this mint state coin.
Estimated Value $12,500-UP.

1925 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. The dies were modified a bit in 1925 to sink the date a little deeper, so it wouldn't wear away quite so quickly after brief circulation. Reflective with excellent luster and a touch of deep gold toning flecks around the rims. A true full head, with complete details on Liberty, the only weakness is on the usual two bosses on the shield, which are a bit mushy. Examination with a glass will note a couple of ticks, but they are minor and not distracting. One of only 80 graded as such by PCGS, with a mere 31 graded higher with a full head.

Lot 648
1926-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Head. This is one of the finest graded 1926-S quarters in existence. PCGS has graded 8 this high, with none graded higher in Full Head. There are none graded higher without the full head either. Flashy mint luster on both sides and just a couple of tick marks worth noting, as this is such an important coin. First, there is a small stain on the top left star on the obverse, a tiny tick mark right of her belly button, and on the reverse there is a carefully hidden mark on the right wing of the eagle, right in the middle of it. Simply put, this coin is nearly perfect, the strike is bold on Liberty's head, with details on each of the 3 leaves in her crown, and the shield has a touch of weakness as always seen. An impossible date to locate in high grade, this stellar example belongs in the finest quarter set in the land. Study it carefully and see if it's the coin for your collection.

1927-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded AU-58. A rarity in this grade, and seldom offered. This date boasts a mintage of 396,000 in all, quite a bit smaller than the 1909 S. V.D.B. cent! Note the lustrous white fields and pleasing appearance. Certainly worthy of a mint state collection and worth considering. Trivial wear on the high points, and with about half of Liberty's head showing, including a couple of the leaves in her crown, but weak on her ear. This is a downright impossible date to locate much better, and far more expensive if you do! An opportunity.
