Lot 488
1796 Draped Bust Dime. . R-4. NGC graded MS-66. This is very likely one of the finest known of the variety. Both sides display deep blue and gray toning in the fields with lighter gray tones on the devices. Fully struck on the stars, with each point and center bold, similar on Liberty's curls which show separation even on the highest design elements. Slightly weak on the eagle's breast and thigh, where a few of the feathers are not fully brought up. As a die variety, this is more desirable than the usually seen JR-1 or JR-6 coins, as far fewer are found of this die pairing. Special care was taken in 1796 to produce really exceptional coins, as this was the first year of issue of this denomination. The design was adopted by famed portraitist Gilbert Stuart, who employed Ann Willing for his model of Liberty, said at the time to be the most beautiful women in Philadelphia. On the reverse, the rendition of the "small eagle" design was also well received, with the proud outstretched wings and delicate wreath surrounding. A superb example of an important type coin that is of unimprovable quality. The recent NGC Population Report shows 9 graded this high, with just 2 graded higher for the date.
Estimated Value $35,000 - 45,000.

1796. JR-1, Rarity-3. . R-1. PCI graded Good-6. Here is a problem-free example of this important type issue. The fields are medium to light gray while the devices are offset by lighter shades of silvery-gray. Although worn, the rims are well separated from the lettering and stars on both sides, and the eagle and wreath are clear. On the obverse, the die shows a lump attached to the first star, as seen on virtually every coin struck by this die.
Estimated Value $750 - 850.

Lot 490
1798/97 Draped Bust Dime. 16 stars. . R-1. NGC graded MS-66. Certainly one of the very finest known of the variety, with only 3 so graded by NGC, and none graded higher. Similar at PCGS, which has only graded 1 coin as high as MS-65, and none higher! This one has frosty luster on both sides, and is virtually untoned. Struck from clashed dies which show faint clash marks on the obverse, and the obverse has been lapped, weakening the lower details. The upper curls on Liberty and a few of the obverse stars are not fully struck, but all show definition, similar on the reverse, where the shield has weakness at the center, as always for this variety. A superb coin which is one of the finest graded.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.

Lot 491
1805 Draped Bust Dime. Four berries. SEGS graded MS-63. Toned with dark gray around the periphery of the obverse, with rose shades at the center, on the reverse we note flecks of gold and blue throughout over silver surfaces. Clean and not displaying many handling marks. We must note the weakness in the strike on the upper curls, feathers and drapery lines, which is nicely toned over. There are some minor hairlines too, as always seen on these important coins. As a type coin, the 1805 dime is a perfect choice, they usually come well struck and are one of the more available dates of the series. Take a close look at this one to see if its the coin for you.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Lot 492
1807 Draped Bust Dime. . R-1. PCGS graded MS-61. Steel gray with hints of colors near the devices and a couple of flecks around the edges. Well struck from clashed dies, as usually seen for this date. The shield lines are all crisp and bold, and the eagle's wings are full and complete. Minor weakness around the periphery, as struck. Problem free surfaces, and perfect for the high grade type collector.
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,200.

Lot 493
1827 Capped Bust Dime. . R-12. NGC graded MS-65. Deep blue and rose toning on both sides, with reflective fields. The surfaces are splendid and show few signs of handling or marks. The strike is full on all but a few of the stars, most of Liberty's curls and the eagle's feathers are sharp. Although this is a common variety, this is probably one of the very finest known of the variety, and of the date. Turning to the NGC Population Report, we note just 2 graded higher, with only 21 graded this high as MS-65 for the date. If you demand gem type coins, take a look at this example to see if it would fit into your collection.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,500.

Lot 495
1828 Capped Bust Dime. Small date. . R-1. PCGS graded MS-65. This coin is most likely a proof, but the graders at PCGS apparently did not agree. Note the full and complete frost on all the devices, especially on Liberty and within the eagle's wings. As to the strike, it is razor sharp throughout, each radial line on every star is bold, and the mirror surfaces within the shield lines on the reverse. Obviously, this is a special coin, and anyone examining it will have to develop their own opinion, but this is clearly not a normal, run of the mill business strike.
Proofs are known from this die pairing, and to find one of the few examples known in such pristine condition, obviously an early strike, would be too much of coincidence. PCGS has only graded 1 coin as a proof, and in mint state just 4 this high and a single coin graded higher. Untoned and with just a couple of faint handling marks. Stuck from clashed dies, as are most of this issue. A foremost rarity in this grade (whether proof or mint state) and one of the finest in existence.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

1829 Capped Bust Dime. Medium 10c. . R-12. PCGS graded MS-66. A superb coin, and certainly one of the finest known of the date! PCGS reports just 4 graded this high, with 2 graded higher. Note the deep gray toning throughout, with a smooth cheek on Liberty that shows no signs of handling. The stars and curls are deeply impressed by the dies, and no signs of weakness are seen. If you demand a coin for the ages, then take a look.

1843 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 64. Deep gray toning on both sides with lighter gold on the devices. The fields show trivial hairlines, and these are not important. After all, perhaps 10 were struck, and few come up for sale. We note the diagnostic die chip on the rim near the second star, which is seen on all known proofs. This coin can be identified by a tiny tick mark in the field between the first two stars, and another couple of ticks near Liberty's arm above her elbow in the left obverse field. A worthy coin to add to the most advanced portfolio. NGC reports only 3 graded this high, with 3 graded higher.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 13,000.

1857 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 65. Although the exact mintage is unknown, it is thought that about 70 were struck in Proof in 1857 (this estimate is from the PCGS Population Report), of which precious few survive in gem condition. This one is a beauty which boasts deep gray and blue tones on both sides, and a large "fin" or raised knife rim around the right side of the obverse. One toning spot below the I of DIME. The recent NGC Population Report shows only 14 graded this high, with 8 graded higher. In NGC holder #343377-013.

1857-O Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded MS-67. Here is one of the finest known of the date. The surfaces are pristine and show virtually no signs of handling or abuse. Toned with magnificent blues and golds on both sides, with darker shades at the periphery, and light at the centers. Curiously, the toning is in flakes, and is not evenly distributed, and there may be traces of a fingerprint on the obverse, as some of the toning appears in lines. Boldly struck, with complete details on the stars, Liberty and the wreath. Only 6 graded this high according to the recent NGC Population Report, with a single coin graded higher.

1858 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 65. An early issue that is truly rare in Proof grade, with an estimated mintage of only 100 pieces, very few of which remain in full gem condition today. This one is mostly white in color, with a bit of peripheral gold toning. Note a few hairlines in the fields, but few signs of handling beyond that aside from a very light intermittent scrape from the shield to Liberty's pole and arm. Deeply frosted devices and quite appealing overall. The recent NGC Population Report shows only 12 graded this high with 8 graded higher.

1880 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. The Cameo designation is rarely used by NGC, in fact only 5 coins have been awarded this, with a single coin achieving the "Ultra Cameo" designation. For regular proofs, NGC has graded 194 in all grades, showing how the cameo coins represent just three percent of those graded. The toning on this one is superb, deep blues and greens at the rims and fading to yellow beneath the letters. Frosty white at the centers. A few faint scuffs in the fields, but they are minimal, keeping this coin in the PF-66 class. If you love cameo separation and superb surfaces and color, then this is the coin for you.

Lot 513
1884 Liberty Seated Dime. PCGS graded Proof 65. Bright white and untoned, this one is curious. It appears that the Mint used a bit to much "frosting" on the dies, as Liberty is a bit moth eaten in appearance. This was caused by the Mint using a mild acid to eat into the dies (which creates the roughness and hence the "frosted" devices) then the die is polished on a flat polishing machine, so only the fields are brought back to perfect as glass smoothness. On this particular coin, the devices are a bit too frosted, and some of the definition is lost, as made at the Mint. Well struck and preserved.
