Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 287
Quarter Dollar. 1804. NGC graded MS-63. The Norweb Coin. Here is one of the classic rarities of the Quarter series, not only is it high grade, it is obviously one of the very Finest Known of the date and with an illustrious pedigree too. This is the highest grade given to any 1804 Quarter Dollars by NGC, and PCGS has only awarded this grade to 3 coins, with a single coin graded higher. The surfaces are toned a lovely rose gold with abundant silvery-blue predominating. A glass notes some scattered contact marks, but none of consequence or of a distracting nature. There is a small spot just before the U of UNITED on the reverse which will always serve to identify this coin as coming from the fabulous Norweb Collection which was sold by our friends Dave Bowers and Ray Merena in the late 1980s.

1804 as a coinage date saw little demand, the Philadelphia Mint was grinding out lots of Half Cents and Half Eagles, but virtually nothing else, mintages tailed off to a dribble of Large Cents, Dimes, Quarters, Quarter Eagles and Eagles with other denominations being completely ignored and not coined. Over the years the mystique of 1804 has grown as collectors have had to search high and low to locate any specimen of the date, with the grandest find of all the 1804 Silver Dollar. The 1804 Quarter saw its mintage top out at 6,738, most of which were lost or circulated to low grades. Locating even a moderate grade coin is difficult. To find a choice Mint State example as offered here is a real treasure, and an opportunity not to be taken lightly.

Well struck on all of Liberty's curls, and even on the reverse, with full stars over the eagle and sharply defined breast feathers on the eagle's chest. A numismatic classic.

Lot 290
Quarter Dollar. 1815. NGC graded MS-66. Popular first year of John Reich's Capped Bust design. A superb gem example exhibiting a needle sharp strike, including full center points of every star, and adjustment-free surfaces on both sides. The pristine frosty mint surfaces are overlaid with a natural blending of russets and electric blue iridescense around the devices and perimeters. Pop of only 3 with none higher. PCGS has graded but 1 in MS-65 and none higher. Here is the coin for the perfectionist who demands only the finest.
It is interesting to note that much of this issue was actually struck in January 1816, this was due to the scarcity of bullion caused by the War of 1812. Less than 12 hours after this 1816 delivery, a fire broke out in the Mint and all production ceased until repairs could be made in late 1817. It should also be pointed out, that many of the high grade surviving specimens of 1815 contain the curios "E" or" L" counterstamp above the head. This example of course, is free from this impairment.

Seated Liberty Quarter. 1841-O. ANACS graded MS-61. One of a small hoard which was found some years ago in New Orleans. It is thought that about 40 of this date turned up in 1982, which had been buried under the new Meridien Hotel in the foundation area. Most of the coinage was foreign, but a small handful of local New Orleans coinage was also found. All exhibit evidence of long storage in a damp climate, and have been cleaned. Now with a matte surface but no evidence of circulation. Medium toning and a truly rare date that would be otherwise unavailable to collectors in this grade.
