Russia standing ¾ r., one hand on a shield with the Imperial eagle, the other bracing the plans for the railway, six-line legend above, laurel branch and shield inscribed with the project’s vital dates to the right ("Begun 1901, Completed 1903" – the tunnel, though, would actually be completed in 1904); signed ?????X??? ???? on the groundline / In a central circle: a train emerges from the tunnel, which is decorated with a Russian eagle and a Chinese Imperial dragon on either side; plan of the tunnel above; ????????? ?????????? ????????? ????????? ? ? ????????? ??????? ??? ? ? ? ? ???????? (Constructed by the East Chinese Railway Society, Tunnel Constructor Engineer N.N. Bocharov). An Extremely rare medal of interest to both Russian and Chinese collectors. Very well preserved. 7) Framed black & white photo of the Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich with Count Frederiks. 7 x 5 7/8" matted and in contemporary frame. Set aboard the Imperial yacht Standart, the Count, uniformed and festooned with Orders and decorations, stands next to the young Romanov heir apparent, who wears a sailor’s uniform. Inscribed in French on the back. The photo pristine, the frame missing part of lower border at right, otherwise well-preserved (Lot of 7, only 6 illustrated), Very well preserved. Provenance: from the family of the late Count V.B. Frederiks. The Finno-Russian statesman, Vladimir Borisovich Frederiks (Adolf Andreas Woldemar Freedericksz; 1838-1927), was appointed in 1897, at the age of 60, Imperial Household Minister. Praised by the French ambassador as "the very personification of court life," Frederiks held his position until the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917. He was responsible for the administration of the Imperial family’s personal affairs and living arrangements, as well as the awarding of Imperial honors and medals. During the March Revolution, Frederiks’ home was pillaged and destroyed by fire. He lived in Petrograd until 1924 when he was allowed to go to Finland, where he spent the remaining years of his life.
