Silver Three Cent Pieces

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 516
1851 Silver Three Cents. PCGS graded MS-64. Bright and fresh, with just a whisper of gold toning starting to form over lustrous fields. Nicely struck from cracked and clashed dies.
Estimated Value $300 - 350.

Lot 517
1854 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded MS-66. Here is one of the finest graded of the date, NGC has seen 5 graded as such, with a single coin graded higher. PCGS has even fewer, with 2 graded this high and a single coin graded higher. Don't expect to find a better one! As we know, the type II design has proven to be much rarer in high grades than the earlier issues. This has been established by collectors, and confirmed as the various Population Reports have reflected the data. Silvery gray in color, with flecks of toning mostly around the periphery. Undiminished by contact marks or problems, this gem will satisfy the most fastidious collector.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.

1858 Silver Three Cents. MS-63. Satiny luster and barely toned with hazy white colors. We note the rim is irregular due to striking, while the star is full and complete.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

Lot 520
1860 Silver Three Cents. NGC graded Proof 68. Deep watery fields that reflect back wonderous colors at the top, more gray at the bottom on the obverse. Similar on the reverse, with the top more of a gray tone with the lower portions deep blue and gray. A glass will scarcely locate any hairlines or handling evidence, and this one is truly superb. As to rarity, NGC has graded only one coin this high, this coin, and the next grade down is PF-66, with 2 specimens seen. PCGS hasn't graded any higher than PR-65! That makes this little coin pretty much for certain the Finest Known, but two points! Perhaps there are some others out there that haven't been graded, but we doubt there are any better than the coin on offer here today. Boldly struck save for the center of the tiny branch on the reverse, which is weak at the center. In NGC holder #1600240-042.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
